Shelley Duvall, the distinctive actor whose career ranged from Robert Altman’s films to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and children’s television, died at home in Blanco, Texas, on July 11, 2024. She was 75. Her life partner, Dan Gilroy, told The Guardian that she died in her sleep from complications of diabetes.
From a Houston party to Robert Altman’s films
Born in Fort Worth in 1949 and raised in Houston, Duvall was discovered at a party by people connected with Altman’s Brewster McCloud. The 1970 film became her first screen role and the beginning of a seven-film collaboration with the director, according to ABC News.

That run included Nashville, 3 Women and Popeye. Duvall’s work with Altman showed a screen presence that could be eccentric, vulnerable and sharply comic; it is an important part of her career beyond the two films named in many accounts of her life.
The performances many viewers remember
Wendy Torrance in The Shining
In Kubrick’s 1980 psychological horror film, Duvall played Wendy Torrance, the wife of Jack Nicholson’s character. The Criterion Collection identifies her as Wendy in its catalog entry for The Shining. Wendy’s terror and struggle to protect her son made the role central to the film’s escalating dread.

Duvall later spoke about the strain she experienced while making the film. In a 1981 interview quoted by The Guardian, she said: “I will never give that much again. If you want to get into pain and call it art, go ahead, but not with me.” The Los Angeles Times, quoting a later interview with The Hollywood Reporter, also reported her recollection of scheduled emotional scenes: “To wake up on a Monday morning, so early, and realize that you had to cry all day because it was scheduled — I would just start crying.” These are Duvall’s accounts of her experience, not a complete production history.
Olive Oyl in Popeye
Also released in 1980, Altman’s live-action Popeye gave Duvall the role of Olive Oyl, opposite Robin Williams. The performance drew on her comic timing and distinctive physicality, offering a very different register from Wendy Torrance. ABC News identifies the role among Duvall’s career highlights.

3 Women and work behind the camera
Duvall’s role in Altman’s 3 Women brought her the Cannes best actress award, a major recognition of a performance outside the horror and comedy roles for which she is widely known. Her career also extended into television production: she produced and hosted the children’s anthology Faerie Tale Theatre, which received a Peabody award, according to ABC News.
That producing and hosting work matters to the shape of her legacy. Duvall was not only a memorable presence in front of the camera; she helped bring story-driven programming to young viewers.

Her final years and death
Duvall died four days after her 75th birthday. The Guardian’s account of her death cites Gilroy, her life partner since 1989, for the cause and circumstances. ABC News’s initial report said a cause had not yet been shared at the time of publication; the later Guardian report provides the attributed update.
Gilroy also paid tribute to her love of animals, telling ABC News: “Shelley loved animals, especially birds, now she’s free to fly.”
