Peacemaker season 2 opens with an orgy scene designed to announce an adult, irreverent season. That is supported by James Gunn’s own explanation. The stronger claim in the supplied headline—that the scene “fails a test” that The Boys “totally nailed”—is not established by the available reporting: it names no test, and the coverage does not closely compare the two scenes. A fair reading can still ask what the Peacemaker scene is for, how the show follows it up, and where the comparison runs out of evidence.
Where the scene appears and what happens
The scene is in season 2, episode 1, “The Ties That Grind,” directed by Gunn and dated August 22, 2025, according to the official DC Studios podcast listing. Forbes describes Chris Smith returning after a romantic setback, taking a substance, and discovering that an apparent hallucination is an orgy in his living room; its account notes nudity and the episode’s TV-MA rating. The Guardian likewise places the party after a career setback and Chris’s attempt to numb the pain. That context describes the setup, not whether the scene succeeds as storytelling.

What the scene is meant to do
Gunn told Rainn Wilson in Interview Magazine that the orgy was meant to tell viewers they were in for “a wild ride” and to signal the kind of craziness they would see through the season. He also said, “We’re trying to warn people as much as possible when they see the episode that although this is a follow-up to Superman, it is definitely not for children.” On the evidence of that stated intention, the scene is a tone-setter: it makes the show’s adult register unmistakable from the premiere.
How Gunn described the filming
In the same interview, Gunn said the intimacy coordinator was his “best friend” during the orgy shoot, adding that the coordinator helped the cast do the scene comfortably and stay aligned. Gunn also described filming the season in Atlanta while shooting Superman, with Peacemaker material directed on weekends. These are Gunn’s accounts of the production, not independently verified production records.

Forbes reported Gunn saying HBO did not push back on the scene and did not raise it with him. That is his account of the network’s response, rather than a separate statement from HBO.
What happens after the spectacle
The Guardian’s more specific observation about the scene’s narrative follow-through is that the next episode deals with cleaning up and getting the participants out. That domestic logistics beat is unusual in its account of group-sex scenes on television: rather than ending with the spectacle, the show acknowledges that a room full of people leaves a practical mess and requires attention afterward.
Rank #2
This is a useful point of distinction, but it does not by itself prove that the scene meaningfully advances Chris’s emotional arc or that the aftermath is more than a comic detail. The available coverage describes the setup and the cleanup; it does not offer enough scene-level analysis to settle those questions.
Does The Boys pass a test that Peacemaker fails?
Not on the evidence cited here. The headline’s “test” is undefined, and no reviewed source establishes a shared standard or scores the two orgy scenes against one. The Guardian compares some of Peacemaker violence to The Boys, while SuperHeroHype says the orgy might seem more at home in The Boys than in the DC Universe. Those are tonal comparisons, not proof that one scene handles sex, character, or consequence better.
Rank #3
A meaningful comparison would need to specify what is being judged. Possible questions include whether the scene changes the character or story, how the show presents the participants and their consequences, whether explicit content is integrated with humor or drama, and whether the story follows through afterward. The reporting supplies some evidence on Peacemaker’s stated tonal purpose and next-episode cleanup, but not a close enough account of The Boys’ “Herogasm” scene to make a supported verdict across those criteria.
So the defensible conclusion is narrower: Peacemaker uses the orgy primarily as an unmistakable warning about its adult, chaotic tone, then gives the aftermath a practical comic beat. Whether that is less effective than The Boys is an opinion that requires a defined test and direct comparative analysis—not a fact demonstrated by the cited coverage.
