Naruto’s path to controlling Kurama’s chakra is a progression from an uncontrolled eruption, to deliberate access, to cooperation with Kurama. Later, he receives power from Hagoromo during the Fourth Great Ninja War. The official Naruto retrospective identifies the first two controlled milestones as Nine Tails Chakra Mode and Kurama Link Mode; it does not provide a complete formal taxonomy for every later visual variation.
What counts as a form Naruto mastered?
Here, “mastered” means Naruto can deliberately use a state or power, not merely display Kurama’s chakra during a crisis. That distinction matters: the early red, tailed manifestations are episodes of lost control, while the later milestones mark intentional access and, eventually, a partnership. The names below follow the terminology used by the NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE retrospective rather than treating every fan label as a formal canon stage.
Naruto’s Kurama forms and power milestones, in order
| Milestone | Control and Kurama’s role | When it happens |
|---|---|---|
| Uncontrolled Kurama chakra | Rage-driven eruption; not mastery | Pain fight, manga Volume 47, Chapter 437 |
| Nine Tails Chakra Mode | Naruto deliberately accesses Kurama’s chakra while pushing back the fox’s hatred | Island training, manga Volume 53 |
| Kurama Link Mode | Naruto and Kurama cooperate as partners | Fourth Great Ninja War, manga Volume 60, Chapters 570–571 |
| Hagoromo’s power | A further power grant after Kurama is extracted; not fully classified by the retrospective as a mode sequence | Fourth Great Ninja War, manga Volume 70, Chapters 671 and 673 |
Uncontrolled Kurama chakra: the Pain fight
During the fight with Pain, Naruto’s rage triggers an eruption of the Nine Tails’ chakra that threatens the seal. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE retrospective places this event at Volume 47, Chapter 437 and describes the manifestation as uncontrollable. It is an early sign of Kurama’s influence, not a controlled form Naruto has mastered. NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE retrospective.
Nine Tails Chakra Mode: first controlled access
While training on an isolated island with Killer Bee, Naruto tries to draw out the Nine Tails’ chakra. Kushina appears in his subconscious, tells him about the Nine Tails’ attack, and supports him with her chakra and encouragement. Naruto pushes back the fox’s hatred and gains what the official retrospective calls Nine Tails Chakra Mode. This is his first clear controlled access to Kurama’s chakra. The retrospective links the sequence to Volume 53 and the surrounding chapters. NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE retrospective.

Kurama Link Mode: the partnership
Later in the war, Kurama chooses to help Naruto after witnessing his actions and resolve. Naruto calls him by name, and they become partners. The official retrospective says, “His deeper bond with Kurama allows Naruto to activate Kurama Link Mode!” This cooperative state is a distinct story milestone from Naruto’s earlier success in taking Kurama’s chakra. The retrospective cites Volume 60, Chapters 570–571. NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE retrospective.
Hagoromo’s power: the Six Paths-era turning point
After Madara extracts Kurama from Naruto, Naruto meets Hagoromo, the Sage of Six Paths, in his inner world. The official retrospective says Hagoromo gives Naruto power and Naruto returns from the brink of death; it cites Volume 70, Chapters 671 and 673. That establishes when the power is received, but it does not settle a complete, formal naming scheme for every later combination of Six Paths and Kurama abilities. NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE retrospective.

How KCM differs from Kurama Link Mode
The key difference is the relationship, not just the appearance. Nine Tails Chakra Mode comes from Naruto’s effort to take Kurama’s chakra and resist the fox’s hatred, with Kushina’s help. Kurama Link Mode comes later, once Kurama willingly works with Naruto and the two are partners. Calling them separate milestones preserves the shift from contested access to cooperation.
When does Naruto master Kurama?
There is no single moment that covers every meaning of “master.” Naruto first gains controlled access during the island training sequence associated with Volume 53. His relationship with Kurama changes decisively later in the war, when they become partners and Naruto can activate Kurama Link Mode. If “master” means full cooperation rather than merely using Kurama’s chakra, the partnership is the more meaningful milestone.

Anime timing and naming caveats
The manga volume and chapter references above are the chronology given by the official retrospective. For an anime checkpoint, the official episode page for episode 495 describes Naruto training in Chakra Mode and sensing Nine Tails chakra from Kinkaku; that is a useful anime reference, not evidence of every form’s debut episode. TV Tokyo episode 495 page.
Numbered labels such as “KCM 1” or “KCM 2” are common fan shorthand, but the cited retrospective uses the names Nine Tails Chakra Mode and Kurama Link Mode. Likewise, it does not establish when Naruto masters Baryon Mode or provide a comprehensive official classification of all later Six Paths/Kurama combinations. Shueisha’s catalog confirms that official Naruto reference books exist, but that catalog entry by itself does not resolve those naming questions. Shueisha catalog: Naruto character data book.
