The Tragic Truth About Marilyn Monroe’s Concealed Intelligence

Monroe’s reported reading and self-directed study complicate the “dumb blonde” image, but the evidence does not verify a specific IQ score or covert role.

Marilyn Monroe’s intelligence was obscured by the studio image built around her, not proven by a hidden IQ score or a secret government role. Accounts of her reading, notebooks, political curiosity and acting study point to a self-directed, intellectually engaged woman; they do not establish a psychometric number or covert work.

Why Monroe’s intelligence was easy to miss

Monroe’s public persona and her reported private habits were sharply different. The “dumb blonde” image was useful to studios and audiences, but it is not evidence that she lacked curiosity or the capacity to learn. Nor does correcting that stereotype require replacing it with an unsupported story of a hidden genius.

Her limited formal schooling is part of the context, not a measure of her ability. HISTORY reports that Monroe left school at 15. A 1956 TIME cover story, reproduced in a 2016 retrospective, described her education in dismissive, period-specific terms while also recounting her ambition to become cultured and respected for her acting. The same account mentions her study at the Actors Studio. Its language reflects the assumptions of its time; it should not be treated as an objective assessment of her mind.

What her reading and notebooks tell us

A substantial reported library

HISTORY reported in 2026 that Monroe’s personal library contained more than 450 books when she died, citing Monroe historian and collection owner Scott Fortner. The figure is an attributed report, not a published, independently audited catalogue. The titles named include works by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Freud, Joyce and Rilke.

Fortner interpreted that reading as evidence of an inner life beyond the studio image. That is his characterization, not a statement by Monroe and not a measurement of intelligence. The more grounded point is that this reported collection, if taken as described, is consistent with serious reading across literature and psychology.

Notes, self-improvement and political awareness

Anthony Summers, author of Goddess, described Monroe in a 2022 Netflix Tudum interview as a voracious reader who kept notebooks and journals, made notes, pursued political awareness and tried to improve herself. Summers said: “She kept little notebooks, little journals on which she made notes all the time. And she was a voracious reader, a terrific reader.” This is Summers’s retrospective account of his biographical work, not an archival quotation from Monroe or a psychological assessment.

My Story
  • Written at the height of her fame but not published until over a decade after her death, this autobiography of actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) poignantly recounts her childhood as an unwanted orphan, her early adolescence, her rise in the film industry from bit player to celebrity, and her marriage to Joe DiMaggio.

Read together, these accounts support a careful portrait: Monroe appears to have invested in learning and in her craft despite limited schooling. They do not tell us how she would have scored on a standardized test.

Did Marilyn Monroe have an IQ of 168?

The reviewed sources provide no authenticated IQ test, score report or contemporaneous assessment supporting the widely repeated figures of 165 or 168. That means the score is unverified in the available evidence—not that it is possible to prove no test ever existed.

Books read, wit, political interest and acting ability can illuminate a person’s intellectual life, but none can be converted into an IQ number. The most accurate account leaves the number unconfirmed rather than presenting it as fact.

Was she hiding a secret intelligence role?

The FBI Vault lists a public file on Monroe, and Biography.com quotes a 1962 FBI note about her political views. Those records point to government interest in her associations and opinions. They do not establish that Monroe worked for an intelligence agency or possessed classified information. The Vault page is a file listing and access point; detailed claims should not be attributed to file pages without examining them.

Stories about a diary containing government secrets have also circulated, but the available account describes the story as disputed and notes a later claim that the journal was a book of poems. It is not sound evidence for a covert role. Government surveillance, political curiosity and espionage are different claims; the cited reporting supports the first two, not the third.

What the evidence can—and cannot—show

Question What is supported What is not established
Was she well educated in school? HISTORY reports she left school at 15. That fact does not measure her capacity or later learning.
Did she read widely? HISTORY reports a library of more than 450 books, citing Scott Fortner; Summers recalls avid reading and notebooks. The number is not a primary, audited inventory.
Was she intellectually engaged? Summers describes her as curious, politically aware and intent on self-improvement; TIME recounts her study and artistic ambition. These biographical accounts are not standardized psychological assessments.
Is a specific IQ score documented? The reviewed sources do not provide an authenticated score or test record. Neither 165 nor 168 is verified by this evidence.
Was she an intelligence operative? Public reporting documents government interest in her political views and associations. The cited records do not establish agency work or access to classified material.
