At the time, the allegation was still under investigation. The case later reached a final outcome: on December 26, 2025, South Korea’s Supreme Court rejected the final appeal and finalized a three-year-and-six-month prison sentence for Taeil and two co-defendants.
Why did Taeil leave NCT?
SM Entertainment said it had recently learned of a criminal case related to a sexual crime, considered the matter serious, and decided Taeil could no longer continue activities with NCT. The agency said it discussed the departure with him and that he was cooperating with the police investigation. Yonhap reported the announcement on August 28, 2024.
SM’s statement, reproduced by Soompi, said: “As we were assessing the facts related to the matter, we recognized the severity of the situation and determined that Taeil can no longer continue his activities with the team (NCT). After discussing with Taeil, we have decided on his departure from the group.”
What was known when the departure was announced?
The accusation had been reported to police in June 2024, and police booked Taeil in connection with the case, according to Yonhap’s report citing police. He was questioned for the first time on August 28. SM said that the company and Taeil first learned of the accusation in mid-August. Yonhap reported the investigation timeline on August 29, 2024.
