Who was Neil King Jr.?
Neil Caldwell King Jr. was a journalist whose career included work at the Great Falls Tribune and the Tampa Tribune, followed by a long tenure at The Wall Street Journal. He reported from Europe and Washington and held reporting and editing roles. The Washington Post obituary noted that King and colleague David S. Cloud filed a story cited in the Journal’s Pulitzer Prize-winning breaking-news coverage of the September 11 attacks.
King died at 65 on September 17, 2024. His wife told The Washington Post that complications from esophageal cancer were the cause.
What was King’s 330-mile walk?
On March 29, 2021, King left his Capitol Hill townhouse and set out on foot for the New York area. According to The Washington Post obituary, he covered 330 miles over 26 days, taking back roads through Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He crossed the Bayonne Bridge into Staten Island before continuing into New York.

This was a personal journey along roads and highways, not a trek on one established hiking trail. In a 2023 first-person essay, King described his “meandering, 330-mile saunter” as a way to pay attention to the land and what it could tell him, step by step. Read King’s essay in The Washington Post.
Why did he make the journey?
King’s own account emphasizes close attention to landscape, history and the people he met on the way. His walk also came after cancer surgery and amid pandemic lockdowns; the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol formed part of the moment surrounding his decision to go. The obituary connects those experiences to the urgency he felt, while his essay focuses on what the journey revealed through walking.

How did the walk become American Ramble?
King turned the trip into American Ramble: A Walk of Memory and Renewal, combining travel writing, memoir and reflections on the history of the Eastern Seaboard corridor. The book recounts the journey and the people, places and past he encountered along its route. The Washington Post reviewed the book in April 2023, identifying Mariner as publisher and listing 354 pages; those are publication-time details, not a statement about current editions or availability.
