Spoilers for the ending of Project Hail Mary follow. Ryland Grace survives, but he does not return to Earth: after sending the taumoeba samples home, he turns back to rescue Rocky. The final scenes find Grace alive on Rocky’s world, Erid, teaching science. The film leaves open whether he will ever return to Earth, and no sequel was confirmed in Andy Weir’s cited March 2026 interviews.
What happens at the end of Project Hail Mary?
Grace and Rocky discover that taumoeba—organisms that feed on astrophage, the substance threatening stars—could help save their respective worlds. They collect and cultivate samples to send home. But the plan becomes dangerous when Grace discovers the taumoeba have evolved to get through the xenonite containers, putting Rocky’s return vessel and fuel at risk. TechRadar’s spoiler guide details the film’s ending.

Grace sends the samples toward Earth, then abandons his own return route to find Rocky. Rocky had earlier risked exposure to a harmful atmosphere to save Grace after the ship was damaged. Grace returns the favor: he chooses to help Rocky get home rather than continue toward Earth alone.
The closing scenes show Grace alive on Erid, living in a habitat Rocky helped build and teaching science to Eridian children. Meanwhile, the probes carrying taumoeba reach Earth, where Eva Stratt prepares to use the samples against astrophage. The immediate choice is resolved—Grace saves Rocky and the samples reach Earth—but the film does not say whether Grace will eventually go home.

Is there a post-credits scene?
No. TechRadar’s spoiler guide reports that Project Hail Mary has neither a mid-credits nor a post-credits scene.
Will there be a Project Hail Mary sequel?
No sequel was announced in the cited interviews. Speaking to Den of Geek on March 20, 2026, Andy Weir said, “I am not working on a sequel right now.” He added, “I have absolutely thought about sequel ideas for Project Hail Mary, but I don’t feel like I’ve got something that’s good enough to run with yet.” He also declined to settle whether Grace returns to Earth, saying he might address that if he writes a sequel. Read the Den of Geek interview.
In a March 25, 2026 report about a Wired interview, Weir said he knows what happened to the other two astronauts and is saving that answer as possible sequel material. That leaves narrative possibilities open; it is not evidence that a sequel is in development. Wired’s report covers his comments.
How does the movie ending compare with the book?
The film adapts Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name. In the movie, Grace makes the same defining choice to go back for Rocky rather than take the route home, and the ending shows him on Erid teaching science. The film leaves his eventual return to Earth unresolved. Weir’s comments about a possible sequel do not establish a different ending or guarantee that Grace will return.
