These discussion questions help track what the characters actually say, how their views differ, and how education sits within apartheid-era South Africa.
What is the context for Act 1, Scenes 1–3?
The play is set in Camdebo, South Africa, in autumn 1985. Concord Theatricals describes its central conflict as a Black teacher in a segregated township trying to persuade a young person that education, rather than violence, can address the country’s problems. South Africa’s Department of Basic Education places the play against resistance to apartheid education, including school boycotts and the slogan “Liberation before Education.” That context matters: the argument over learning is also an argument about political urgency and who has access to opportunity.
Use the questions below alongside the assigned edition. Scene summaries can orient you, but the strongest interpretations point to specific dialogue and stage action in the script.
Scene 1: What do Isabel and Thami argue about?
What does Isabel say about gender?
Isabel’s claim concerns women being more intuitive than men. Thami recasts her point as an assertion that women are more emotional, and Isabel objects to the misquotation. In discussing their disagreement, separate her actual wording from Thami’s formulation: the distinction shows how an argument can shift when one speaker paraphrases another.

How do their debate styles shape the exchange?
Compare the language each uses, how each responds to the other, and who gets to define the terms of the debate. The scene invites discussion of gender and rhetoric, but it also offers a way to consider the broader question of who is heard and how arguments are represented. Avoid treating either character’s position as settled by gender or race alone; ground claims in what the dialogue shows.
What does Mr. M’s bell do?
Mr. M rings the school bell to stop the overlapping argument and restore the rules of debate. That practical function is the firmest starting point for interpretation. If you argue that the bell has a wider symbolic meaning, support it with evidence from elsewhere in the play rather than assuming that symbolism from this moment alone.

Scene 2: What changes in Isabel’s account?
Scene 2 is identified in study materials as Isabel’s first monologue and is connected to her visit to “the location.” A useful discussion should focus on what she says she observed and on the words that signal a change in her perceptions.
- What details does Isabel give about the visit?
- Which words or comparisons suggest a shift in how she sees the place or its people?
- How does her account compare with what she knew or assumed beforehand?
Do not substitute a generic story of personal transformation for the scene’s evidence. The precise observations and language can vary in significance by edition and classroom interpretation, so cite the assigned text directly.

Scene 3: Why does Mr. M invite Isabel to join the quiz team?
Mr. M invites Isabel to join Thami on a team for an inter-school English literature quiz. The invitation makes her part of an educational opportunity for Thami and sets up the question of what Mr. M believes learning can accomplish.
- What reasons does Mr. M give for asking Isabel to take part?
- What does he hope the competition will offer Thami?
- How does the invitation connect Isabel’s visit in Scene 2 with the school debate in Scene 1?
- Which aims are stated by Mr. M, and which conclusions are your own?
Distinguish his stated intentions from your judgment about whether a quiz or other educational opportunity can overcome structural inequality. The scene sets up that question; it does not settle it.

How should readers interpret “Knowledge has banished fear”?
Scene-study materials attribute the phrase “Knowledge has banished fear” to Mr. M. Treat it as a character’s claim about knowledge, fear, and education—not as a universally proven rule. Ask what kind of fear he means in the surrounding dialogue, what knowledge can address, and what it cannot change on its own. Check the exact wording and punctuation in your assigned edition before quoting it in an essay.

Compare their views of education’s value, the urgency of political change, and the risks of disrupting schooling. The historical background makes this more than a disagreement about study habits: youth resistance in 1980s South Africa included school boycotts, and the Department of Basic Education frames the play as raising the question of whether such resistance was right.

- What does each character appear to believe education can achieve?
- How do they weigh learning against immediate political action?
- Which parts of their positions are explicit in these scenes, and which remain inference?
Use the historical context to sharpen the questions, not to claim that a short exchange resolves the conflict.
Where is “the location”?
In this play, “the location” refers to the township setting associated with the Black community, in contrast with the segregated spaces and institutions around it. For close analysis of Isabel’s visit, rely on the assigned script’s details rather than assuming that the phrase alone supplies a full account of its geography or living conditions.
What makes a strong answer to these questions?
- Quote or precisely refer to the assigned edition when discussing dialogue.
- Separate what a character says from what another character claims the speaker said.
- Distinguish observable stage action from a proposed symbolic interpretation.
- Connect education to the play’s apartheid-era setting without reducing the characters to political stereotypes.
- Label interpretation as interpretation when the text does not state it directly.
