“1944” was named as a tentative Yellowstone prequel title in Paramount’s 2023 announcement, but it has not been confirmed as the Dutton family’s next series in production. As of October 4, 2026, TV Insider reported that the project was still in development at Paramount; the report did not establish a cast, plot, filming schedule, or premiere date.
Is Yellowstone: 1944 actually happening?
The clearest current status is that 1944 was reportedly still in development at Paramount, according to TV Insider’s August 19, 2026 update, which attributed the information to journalist Matt Webb Mitovich’s June newsletter. TV Insider said no further details had been shared and described the project’s status as uncertain. That is secondary reporting, not an official Paramount confirmation that filming is underway or that a release has been scheduled. TV Insider’s status update.
Paramount’s 2023 announcement, reported by the Associated Press, named “1944” as a tentative title for a new Yellowstone prequel. What has—and has not—been announced
- Title: “1944” was announced as a tentative title in 2023, not as a confirmed final series title.
- Premiere date: No confirmed date appears in the sources reviewed.
- Production schedule: No confirmed filming schedule appears in those sources.
- Cast and story: No cast or plot details have been confirmed.
TV Insider noted speculation that Spencer Dutton, or other surviving characters from 1923, could return. The report did not confirm those appearances. Where 1944 fits in the Dutton timeline
Yellowstone follows the Dutton family and its Montana ranch. Paramount’s official series page lists five seasons, 53 episodes, and a season 5B premiere date of November 10, 2024. Paramount’s Yellowstone page.
The franchise already has two established origin stories: 1883, about the family’s westward journey toward Montana, and 1923, which Paramount+ describes as a story about a new generation of Duttons in the early-twentieth-century Mountain West. These give viewers historical context for the franchise, but they do not establish the plot or returning characters of 1944.

Paramount’s February 15, 2022 announcement described the then-titled 1932 as following a new generation of Duttons during western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Paramount’s announcement of 1932. AP’s February 2026 report later listed 1944 among potential future spin-offs alongside Marshals, while noting that 1883, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and 1923 had already debuted. For now, viewers can say that Paramount announced a tentative Yellowstone prequel title, and that a 2026 industry report said the project was reportedly still in development. There is not enough confirmed information to say what the show will cover, who will appear, when it will film, or when it will premiere. Any of those details would need a new official announcement or more definitive reporting.
