The Simpsons made its prime-time debut on Fox on December 17, 1989, with a Christmas story that was the first episode broadcast—not the first produced. Its arrival marked a leap from short cartoons to a standalone series; the show’s broader importance to Fox became clear over time, rather than through a single rule-breaking premiere.

What was the first Simpsons episode?

The first episode aired was “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire,” broadcast on Fox on December 17, 1989. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History identifies Mimi Pond as the writer and credits the characters to Matt Groening. The episode follows the family at Christmas, as Homer takes a job as a department-store Santa and the family’s plans go awry. The Smithsonian’s collection record documents the broadcast and preserves an episode script.

Why did the Christmas episode air first?

Broadcast order and production order are not the same. “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” was the first episode viewers saw, while episode histories identify “Some Enchanted Evening” as an earlier-produced installment. The Smithsonian record establishes which episode aired first, but does not explain the production sequence or why the Christmas story led the broadcast schedule. The episode’s seasonal setting made it apt for a December debut, but the available account does not establish that this was the sole reason for the choice.

The launch grew out of the animated shorts featuring the Simpsons on The Tracey Ullman Show. In a 2019 retrospective, NPR Illinois reported that Fox initially proposed a Christmas special and that producer James L. Brooks encouraged Groening to ask for 13 episodes instead. The Christmas story ultimately opened the series on December 17. NPR Illinois recounts the launch; a December 1989 interview with Groening also places the new series’ debut in that month. The Simpsons Archive preserves the interview.

What did “breaking TV rules” mean?

The premiere’s reputation is better understood as a shift in format and tone than as a documented breach of a specific broadcast rule. The show took an irreverent animated family from short segments into its own half-hour prime-time series. Fox promotional material described the program as subversive, but that is the network’s framing—not evidence that the episode violated a named regulation or scheduling convention.

The stronger historical claim concerns the series’ later impact. The Television Academy says The Simpsons helped establish Fox as a legitimate broadcast television network and became Fox’s first program to reach the ratings Top 10. Those milestones speak to the show’s importance over time; they do not show that the premiere by itself made Fox successful. The Television Academy’s series history places the program in that wider network context.

How many people watched the premiere?

The Smithsonian reports that the episode reached approximately 13.4 million homes and ranked thirtieth in the ratings for the week of December 11–17, 1989. The figure is an approximate number of households, not an individual viewer count. Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of American History.
