The Daily Show turned Donald Trump’s July 31, 2024 exchange with ABC News reporter Rachel Scott at the National Association of Black Journalists convention into satire. A third-party transcript attributes the segment’s commentary to correspondent Ronny Chieng.
What Trump said at the NABJ convention
At the convention in Chicago, Scott asked Trump: “Do you believe that Vice President Kamala Harris is only on the ticket because she is a black woman?” CNN’s July 31 rush transcript records Trump saying he had known Harris’s Indian heritage but claimed he had not known she was Black until years earlier. He then asked: “So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she black?”

Scott replied: “She is always identified as a black woman and she went to a historically black college.” The exchange concerned Harris’s multiracial identity; Trump’s comments questioned whether she was Indian or Black. CNN’s transcript is labeled a rush transcript and may be updated.
How The Daily Show responded
A transcript hosted by Happy Scribe presents the interview as having “got off to a rocky start,” then uses the exchange as the setup for jokes about Trump’s apparent confusion over Harris’s identity. The transcript attributes the main commentary to correspondent Ronny Chieng.

Chieng’s transcribed line, “I guess Trump just discovered that black don’t crack,” is followed by a joke comparing the episode to doing birtherism as a compliment. These are satirical lines, not a factual description of Harris or her identity. Because the transcript is hosted by a third party rather than an official program page, the attribution and wording should be understood as transcript-based. Read the Happy Scribe transcript.

At a Sigma Gamma Rho event in Houston on July 31, Harris described Trump’s appearance as “the same old show” of “divisiveness and disrespect,” and said: “The American people deserve better.” The Washington Post reported her response.
