In 2000, four friends from Santa Rosa, California, made an album called Summer 2000 with help from one member’s mother. They were children aiming for polished pop; soon, the result made them uncomfortable and they moved on. A tiny CD-R run and an online posting kept the music in circulation, however, and listeners later heard its rough edges as part of its appeal. Numero Group issued it on vinyl in 2025, and the band’s story returned in a documentary directed by one of its members.
Four friends set out to make pop music
X-Cetra were Janet Washburn, Jessica Hall, Mary Washburn and Ayden Mayeri, friends growing up in Santa Rosa. When they made Summer 2000, three were 11 and one was 9, according to KQED’s 2026 account. Their inspirations included the Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child, alongside Fiona Apple. Janet Washburn recalled that the group was “ready to become the next Spice Girls.”
The project took shape with help from Mary and Janet’s mother, Robin O’Brien, who had been active in the home-taping scene in the 1980s. She helped the girls fit their lyrics and melodies to pre-recorded tracks by German musician Achim Treu. Mary described her mother’s approach this way: “Our mom is very respectful of children’s personhood and was not condescending.”
What Summer 2000 sounded like—and why the girls moved on
The Guardian characterizes the album as bedroom pop with Y2K-era R&B references. Its sound hinges on a striking contrast: simple backing tracks beneath the girls’ young voices. That is not quite the polished pop the group hoped to make. Mary Washburn put the gap between ambition and result plainly: “We wanted to sound like hot teens and good singers,” but “We sounded like ourselves, which was uncomfortable.”

The album includes “Speechless,” “Promises” and “Wonderland.” Jessica Hall said the last song uses Alice-in-Wonderland imagery to address “the discomfort of growing up”—a subject that took on a different resonance as the band members themselves entered adolescence. The four soon put the project behind them.
A handful of CD-Rs carried the music beyond the band
The Guardian reports that only 20 CD-R copies were made. In 2001, an unknown person posted one online. The band members had moved on, but the recording could now reach listeners outside their immediate circle.

By 2020, the album was being discussed on Rate Your Music. KQED describes its later discovery by experimental-music listeners and its growth into a cult object. The reporting does not establish a single viral moment or identify the original uploader, and it provides no sales, chart, streaming or audience totals. “Cult classic” describes the album’s unusual afterlife, not a documented measure of its reach.
Numero Group gave the album a second life on vinyl
Online rediscovery eventually brought the record label Numero Group to the group. The label contacted the members, then released Summer 2000 on vinyl in January 2025, according to The Guardian. The physical reissue marked a change in the album’s life: what began as a small home-recorded CD-R project received a formal release years after its creators had set it aside. A matching nail polish accompanied that release.

Looking back, Ayden Mayeri observed that Y2K nostalgia “is so popular right now with young people, but it’s all very commercial stuff being recreated.” X-Cetra’s album offers a less polished, more personal artifact from that period: children experimenting with pop forms rather than adults recreating them decades later.

The members reunited around Summer 2000: The X-Cetra Story, directed by Mayeri. KQED reported in April 2026 that the documentary won the SXSW documentary jury award. The film’s focus on the group’s own experience complements the album’s rediscovery: the story is not only how listeners found the music, but how its makers came to revisit a project they had once felt embarrassed by.

For the band, the arc runs from childhood ambition to adolescent discomfort, then to an adult reassessment. For listeners, the very qualities that once seemed wrong to the young musicians—the stark arrangement, youthful voices and distance from conventional polish—became reasons to keep listening.
