One to One: John & Yoko presents Yoko Ono through the lens of a painful separation from her daughter, Kyoko, as well as her work and life with John Lennon in early-1970s New York. Co-director Scott Macdonald says previously unheard taped calls changed how he understood Ono’s emotional life during that period. The film is a focused portrait of the couple’s first 18 months in New York, not a comprehensive biography of either subject.
What is One to One: John & Yoko about?
The documentary, co-directed by Kevin Macdonald and Scott Macdonald, focuses on John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s first 18 months in New York after they arrived in August 1971. It brings together two kinds of material: restored footage from the couple’s August 30, 1972 benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden and recordings of their private phone calls.
The concerts were benefit shows associated with Willowbrook State School. According to the interview, Sean Ono Lennon restored the concert visuals and remixed the audio. The film uses that public performance material alongside private conversations to offer a view of the couple’s public and personal worlds.
How does the documentary present Yoko Ono differently?
Scott Macdonald says the phone recordings made him reconsider Ono’s experience during this period. In his account, her separation from Kyoko gives the story an intimate emotional dimension that can be missed when Ono is viewed mainly through her art, public image, or relationship with Lennon. He described his reaction this way: “When I first heard it, it made me feel totally different about Yoko, because you realize all this period, she was a mother in pain who’s trying to find her child.”

That is Macdonald’s interpretation of what the recordings reveal, rather than a claim that the documentary settles every question about Ono’s history. He also said, “I want to make people understand what that must have felt like for her.” The film’s approach, as he describes it, is to foreground the personal stakes of Ono’s separation from her daughter while showing her within the couple’s early New York years.
What do the taped phone calls add?
The interview describes the calls as recordings Lennon and Ono made to protect themselves against government wiretapping, and characterizes them as previously unheard and candid. Those descriptions come from the interview; they are not independently established here. Macdonald says the conversations touch on a range of subjects, including Ono discussing the Beatles’ breakup and Lennon discussing politics, as well as everyday matters.

Placed beside the concert footage, the calls shift the film away from performance alone. They let the directors build a portrait from the couple’s conversations as well as their appearance onstage, with Ono’s search for Kyoko informing Macdonald’s reading of the period.
What concert footage does the film use?
The concert material comes from two Madison Square Garden benefit shows held on August 30, 1972, in connection with Willowbrook State School. The interview says Sean Ono Lennon restored the visuals and remixed the audio for the documentary. The concerts provide the film’s central public-performance element, in contrast with its intimate phone recordings.
