There is no established report that Family Guy formally fired James Woods. The clearest account is Woods’s own: in 2018, he said he had been offered another episode and turned it down. The show later made a pointed joke about his politics while renaming its fictional James Woods Regional High School in honor of Adam West. Those events suggest a relationship marked by political disagreement, but they do not prove that the show’s producers dismissed Woods.
How James Woods joined Family Guy
Woods began appearing as an exaggerated version of himself after learning that the show’s fictional school was named James Woods High. In a historical interview with The A.V. Club, creator Seth MacFarlane said Woods thought the school’s name was funny and wanted to appear, so the team wrote an episode around him. The fictional school name was an in-joke; it does not mean Woods owned or sponsored a real school in Quahog.
Woods went on to make recurring guest appearances. Later coverage identifies the season 15 episode “Inside Family Guy” as his last voice appearance on the series, though that fact alone does not explain why he did not appear again.
What Woods said about turning down an episode
In 2018, Woods said he had recently been offered another Family Guy episode but declined it. Slashfilm later quoted his tweet: “I was recently offered another #FamilyGuy episode and reluctantly turned it down for similar reasons. It was so mean-spirited, so totally political, and (worst crime of all) simply not funny. The rabid hatred of conservative values has ruined comedy. #Sad.”

That is Woods’s characterization of the episode and his stated reason for refusing it—not a neutral assessment of the episode, nor evidence that the show cut ties with him. The post is quoted in Slashfilm’s retrospective.

Why the show renamed James Woods Regional High
In the May 12, 2019 season 17 finale, “Adam West High,” the town considers renaming James Woods Regional High School after Adam West, who died in 2017. During the argument, Brian says Woods is “an embarrassment to Quahog” and calls him “a political troll and a maniac on Twitter.” That is fictional dialogue in a satirical episode, not a producer’s formal explanation for Woods’s absence.
The episode also served as a tribute to West. As TheWrap reported at the time, executive producer Rich Appel said the episode was bookended by a tribute to West and conveyed that he was “not replaceable.” The school renaming therefore had a clear tribute purpose alongside its jab at Woods’s public persona.

Was James Woods fired or cancelled?
The available accounts do not establish a formal firing or a public decision by the producers to remove Woods. They establish that Woods said he declined a later offer, that his last reported voice appearance was in season 15, and that the show later mocked his political activity in a school-renaming storyline. A 2025 Slashfilm retrospective reads politics as part of the explanation for his disappearance, but that is an interpretation of the timeline and the episode, not proof of a private production decision.
