At the 66th Golden Globe Awards on January 11, 2009, director Christopher Nolan accepted the supporting actor award for Heath Ledger, honored posthumously for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight. Nolan spoke of sadness, pride and the lasting place Ledger had made for himself in cinema.
Why Christopher Nolan accepted the award
Ledger won the 2009 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for The Dark Knight. Nolan, who directed the film and had worked with Ledger, accepted the award on his behalf. The Golden Globes awards database records Ledger as the winner; the organization’s retrospective on the ceremony recounts Nolan’s acceptance.

What Nolan said
The Golden Globes’ retrospective quotes Nolan as saying: “On behalf of all of us who worked with Heath on Dark Knight, I accept this with mix of sadness and incredible pride. He will be eternally missed but he will never be forgotten.”
In contemporaneous coverage published the following day, the Los Angeles Times printed a longer version of Nolan’s remarks. It quotes him saying, “After Heath passed on, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema,” before describing how the response to Ledger’s work helped him focus on the place Ledger had made for himself through talent and dedication. The newspaper’s January 12, 2009 report provides that account. The two reports render portions of the remarks differently, so their wording is best read as separate source-specific transcriptions rather than combined into a single definitive transcript.

Ledger’s family welcomed the honor
The Golden Globes retrospective also reports a family statement conveyed through Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger: “We are overjoyed for him. It’s wonderful.” The brief reaction sits alongside Nolan’s more reflective remarks as another response to the posthumous award.

The moment joined recognition of a specific performance with an acknowledgment of an enormous loss. Nolan’s words looked beyond the ceremony: while mourning Ledger, he pointed to the lasting artistic mark created by the actor’s work in The Dark Knight. Ledger’s win was a posthumous honor at the 2009 ceremony, not an award accepted by Ledger himself.
