Krypto is Superman’s superpowered dog: a Kryptonian canine whose abilities resemble Superman’s under a yellow sun. DC lists his first appearance in Adventure Comics #210 in 1955. His origin varies by continuity, but the 2025 comic Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton tells a recent version in which he is lost in space during a rocket test and arrives on Earth alone.
Who is Krypto?
Krypto is a loyal companion and defender of the Superman family. DC’s character profile describes him as the family’s dog, spending time with the Kents, Supergirl, and Clark and Lois’s son, Jon. That profile captures one familiar status quo; his place in the family can differ across comics and adaptations. DC’s Krypto profile
What powers does Krypto have?
Krypto is Kryptonian. DC says exposure to a yellow sun gives him powers corresponding to Superman’s, including super strength, flight, invulnerability, super speed, heat vision, freeze breath, x-ray vision, superhuman hearing, and a healing factor. Individual stories may emphasize or portray those abilities differently. DC’s Krypto profile
When did Krypto first appear?
DC dates Krypto’s comics debut to Adventure Comics #210, published in March 1955. The story was titled “The Super-Dog from Krypton!” and was written by Otto Binder with art by Curt Swan. DC’s February 20, 2025 announcement

Why does Krypto’s origin change?
His defining identity—Superman’s Kryptonian dog—is more consistent than the details of how he reached Earth or when he joined Clark. DC’s 2025 timeline places Krypto alongside Clark during his teenage years in Smallville as Superboy. DC’s 2025 timeline announcement
The five-issue Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton tells a different, recent version. Krypto begins as a puppy with Jor-El, Lara, and baby Kal-El on Krypton. A rocket test goes wrong, leaving him lost in space; he eventually lands on Earth alone. That is this series’ premise, not a single origin that applies to every continuity. DC’s series announcement
