Domhnall Gleeson, known for Star Wars, and Sabrina Impacciatore, known for The White Lotus, star in The Paper, a workplace comedy set in The Office universe. It is a new series about a struggling Ohio newspaper—not a return to Dunder Mifflin—and Peacock announced its second season would return September 9, 2026.
Who joined The Office universe series?
The actors named in the casting news are Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore. Peacock’s official cast overview also lists Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, Eric Rahill, Duane Shepard Sr., Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Mo Welch, Nancy Lenehan, Molly Ephraim and Tracy Letts. Ikumelo, Edelman, Rahill and Welch also joined the writers’ room, according to Peacock’s cast overview.
In the series, Gleeson plays Ned Sampson, the newspaper’s editor-in-chief, while Impacciatore plays managing editor Esmeralda Grand. Those roles are identified in Peacock’s season-two cast guide, dated September 8, 2026. Oscar Nuñez also reprises his Office role as Oscar Martinez. What is The Paper about?
The Paper follows a documentary crew that leaves Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch and turns its cameras on the Toledo Truth Teller, a struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. Ned is trying to revive the paper, whose publisher recruits volunteer reporters. The setting and most of the ensemble are new, even though the series shares The Office universe and documentary premise.

Greg Daniels, co-creator and showrunner, explained the connection to the new workplace to the Television Academy: “There’s connective tissue, and a newspaper trying to cut costs while covering the local community would be attractive to that documentary crew. Especially if there’s a guy trying to fight against that.” The Academy’s September 2, 2025 feature also describes Esmeralda as a reality-star-turned-managing-editor and Oscar Martinez as the newspaper’s head accountant.
Is The Paper a reboot or a sequel?
It is best understood as a new series in the same fictional universe, rather than a reboot of The Office. The original show centered on a Scranton paper company and its employees; The Paper shifts the documentary crew to a Toledo newspaper and introduces a new newsroom cast. Oscar Martinez is a returning character, but the full original cast does not return as the new ensemble.
The series order and premise were reported on May 8, 2024, and Peacock published its cast overview on November 20, 2024. The original announcement described a new workplace comedy set in The Office universe; it did not describe a remake of the British original. See ABC Audio’s May 2024 report.
