New York Magazine said reporter Olivia Nuzzi acknowledged a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while she was covering it, calling the undisclosed relationship a breach of its conflict-of-interest standards. News organizations identified that subject as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., though the magazine did not name him in its statement. Nuzzi said the relationship was never physical.
What New York Magazine and Nuzzi said
New York Magazine said its Washington correspondent had acknowledged to editors that she had engaged in a “personal relationship” with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while reporting on the campaign. The magazine said this violated its standards on conflicts of interest and disclosure, and that Nuzzi would not have continued covering the presidential campaign if editors had known. The Associated Press reported the magazine’s statement.
In a statement reproduced by the AP and other outlets, Nuzzi said that in early 2024 “the nature of some communication between myself and a former reporting subject turned personal.” She said she did not directly report on the subject or use them as a source during that period, and regretted not disclosing the relationship immediately. Nuzzi also said, “The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict.” The Guardian carried her statement.
Why Kennedy was identified—and what remains unconfirmed
The magazine’s public statement referred only to a “former subject.” The AP reported that unnamed sources and The New York Times identified the person as Kennedy; ABC News likewise reported that coverage had identified him, while noting that the magazine did not confirm his identity. Nuzzi had not publicly confirmed Kennedy’s involvement in the reporting cited by the AP. ABC News summarized the magazine’s statement and its limits.

Kennedy’s spokesperson told Axios that Kennedy had met Nuzzi once, for an interview she requested, which the spokesperson characterized as a “hit piece.” That is the spokesperson’s account, not an independent confirmation of the nature or extent of their communications. Axios reported the spokesperson’s response.
What is known about the timing
The available accounts describe the timing differently, so an exact start date is not established. Nuzzi’s statement said communications became personal in early 2024. The AP reported New York Magazine editor in chief David Haskell’s account that the relationship began after Nuzzi’s November 2023 profile of Kennedy and reportedly ended in August 2024. These are attributed accounts, not a single independently verified chronology.

The profile, titled “The Mind-Bending Politics of RFK Jr.’s Spoiler Campaign,” was published in November 2023. The AP reported Haskell’s account of the relationship’s timing; The Guardian reported Nuzzi’s description of when communications turned personal.
Did Nuzzi cover Kennedy during the relationship?
Nuzzi said she did not directly report on the subject or use him as a source during the period she described. That does not change the magazine’s stated concern: it said the personal relationship involved a former subject relevant to the campaign she was covering and should have been disclosed under its standards. The magazine said she would not have remained on the presidential campaign beat had editors known.

What the magazine said about the reporting
New York Magazine said its internal review found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias in Nuzzi’s work. The AP reported that the magazine planned a more thorough third-party review. Those conclusions concern the magazine’s review process; they do not erase the separate standards violation the magazine said had occurred. The AP reported the magazine’s findings and planned review.
In October 2024, The Washington Post reported that the magazine and Nuzzi had parted ways. Nuzzi’s attorney said two investigations had found her 2024 campaign reporting sound. That assessment is attributable to her attorney. The Washington Post reported the departure and attorney’s statement.
