Halloween did not emerge from one ancient festival or arrive fully formed. Its customs took shape over centuries, blending Gaelic and Christian observances with regional folk practices and later American social traditions. Here are 13 details that help separate documented history from legend and debated origin theories.

1. Halloween’s history is layered, not singular

The Library of Congress traces Halloween’s roots to a mix of traditions, including the Gaelic festival of Samhain and Christian observances around All Saints’ Day. That connection is a starting point, not proof that every modern custom descends directly from one ancient celebration. The holiday’s familiar forms developed over time.

2. Jack-o’-lanterns were once carved from turnips

Pumpkins are now the familiar choice in the United States, but the Library of Congress describes an Irish tradition of carving turnips into lanterns. The pumpkin became the better-known carving material as Halloween customs took root in North America.

3. Stingy Jack is a legend, not a verified historical person

A folktale about a character called Stingy Jack is associated with the jack-o’-lantern. In the tale, Jack is denied entry to both heaven and hell and wanders with a light. It helps explain the lantern’s folklore; it should not be mistaken for a documented account of how the custom began.

4. Trick-or-treating has no single settled origin

In “The Origins of Halloween Traditions,” published October 26, 2021, the Library of Congress says there is much debate about trick-or-treating’s origins and presents three broad theories: offerings associated with Samhain, medieval practices such as souling and guising, and German-American belsnickeling. These are proposed influences, not a proven line of descent.

5. Souling and guising involved more than asking for candy

In the customs described by the Library of Congress, people went from place to place offering prayers, songs, jokes, or other performances in exchange for food or money. The exchanges varied by practice and place; they were not simply the modern candy-collecting routine under an older name.

6. Belsnickeling is one proposed influence, not the definitive source

Belsnickeling, a German-American custom involving people in disguise visiting homes, is among the traditions the Library of Congress identifies as a possible influence on trick-or-treating. The source presents it alongside other theories, so it cannot establish that modern door-to-door visits came from belsnickeling alone.

7. Halloween treats were not always mostly candy

The Library of Congress notes that older Halloween offerings could include fruit, nuts, coins, and toys. Candy became the dominant treat later. That shift helps explain why today’s candy-centered version should not be projected unchanged onto earlier celebrations.

8. Candy corn became a Halloween symbol after it was invented

The Library of Congress says candy corn is sometimes credited to a candymaker in the 1880s and that Goelitz brought it to a wider market in 1898. Its association with Halloween came later; it was not created as a Halloween sweet, according to that account.

9. Black cats reflect old superstition, not modern evidence

Black cats became associated with Halloween through historical superstition. That association is a cultural belief, not evidence for contemporary claims about what happens to cats at Halloween; the Library of Congress’s historical discussion does not establish those claims.

10. Black and orange have historical interpretations, not a proven ancient code

The Library of Congress connects black and orange with interpretations of Samhain. That is one explanation for the familiar palette, rather than an uncontested rule that the colors have carried the same fixed meaning since ancient times.

11. Apple-bobbing had a courtship association

The Library of Congress traces apple-bobbing to courtship customs. It was one tradition among many, not a universal Halloween activity, and its historical association should not be confused with a claim that everyone played it for the same reason.

12. Early-20th-century Halloween could be a home-party occasion

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s account, “The New Woman meets the old witch,” describes Halloween in the early 20th century as a setting for home parties, games, romance, and social relationships. That picture differs from the modern popular image centered on children going door to door.

13. Halloween and Día de los Muertos are distinct observances

They fall near each other on the calendar, but their proximity does not make them interchangeable. The Library of Congress’s 2024 article “The Multinational Traditions of Halloween and Día de los Muertos” addresses their distinct histories and contemporary contexts. It quotes expert Hugo V. Gutiérrez describing modern Día de los Muertos events as occasions for social gatherings, music, cultural festivals, parades, and costume contests. Those contemporary events do not erase the observance’s separate history.

Sources and historical context

The Library of Congress’s “The Origins of Halloween Traditions” is the main source for the customs and origin theories discussed here. Its Chronicling America Halloween research guide points readers toward historic newspaper material, but a guide is not itself a specific newspaper account. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History provides the early-20th-century American social-history perspective, while the Library of Congress’s 2024 article distinguishes Halloween from Día de los Muertos.
