Murdaugh: Death in the Family is a scripted drama rooted in real events and journalist Mandy Matney’s reporting, memoir and podcast—not a documentary or a scene-by-scene record. Its public-case backdrop is real, but private conversations, motives and chronology may be dramatized. One especially important update: Alex Murdaugh’s 2023 murder convictions were reversed by the South Carolina Supreme Court in 2026, which ordered a new trial.

What is the series based on?

Hulu’s official description presents the series as a dramatization of the Murdaugh family’s unraveling. ABC/Disney materials say it is based on reporter Mandy Matney’s memoir and podcast; Matney is also an executive producer and is portrayed in the series by Brittany Snow. That connection explains the show’s reporting background, but it does not establish that every scene or line of dialogue is verified.

Hulu announced the series premiere for October 15, 2025, with three episodes at launch and weekly releases afterward. Its cast includes Patricia Arquette as Maggie Murdaugh, Jason Clarke as Alex, Johnny Berchtold as Paul and Will Harrison as Buster. Promotional descriptions of the family are the distributor’s framing, not independent findings about the people portrayed.

Which events have a documented basis?

The killings and prosecution

Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed in June 2021. Their deaths and Alex Murdaugh’s prosecution are real events at the center of the series. A useful distinction is that an event’s appearance in the drama does not make every surrounding detail a court-established fact: allegations, witness accounts, jury findings and appellate rulings carry different weight.

The 2019 boat crash and Paul

The boat crash is part of the public history the show draws on. TIME reports that Paul was known for heavy drinking. The same reporting says Matney’s belief about who was driving was based on conversations with people who were present; Paul died before facing trial. That belief should be attributed to Matney, not presented as a judicial finding.

A clear chronology change: the Bahamas trip

TIME reports that the family’s Bahamas trip shown in the series took place in 2017—before the 2019 boat crash—even though the show’s sequence suggests otherwise. This is a concrete example of the drama reordering events; by itself, it does not establish that the rest of the series is either broadly accurate or inaccurate.

What should be treated as dramatic interpretation?

The series depicts events leading up to the murders and offers an interpretation of how they may have unfolded. Private conversations, family dynamics, motives and the sequence of scenes are especially difficult to verify from public records. TIME’s reporting discusses selected comparisons and interviews with Matney and showrunner Michael Fuller, but the available reporting does not provide a comprehensive episode-by-episode audit or establish every intimate exchange shown onscreen.

For any specific scene, ask what kind of evidence supports it: a dated public record, a court finding, an attributed witness account, or the program’s own dramatic construction. Unless a scene is independently corroborated, describe it as something the series portrays rather than as a proven event.

What is Alex Murdaugh’s current legal status?

A jury convicted Murdaugh of Maggie and Paul’s murders in 2023. That verdict is now a historical event, not the current procedural endpoint. On May 13, 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court reversed the murder judgment and remanded the case for a new trial.

The court’s case summary states: “Concluding former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill’s improper external influence on the jury deprived Richard Alexander Murdaugh of his right to a fair trial by an impartial jury, the Court reverses and remands for a new trial.” The ruling concerns the fairness of the trial; it does not determine whether the series’ portrayal is accurate, and the case is not finally resolved.

At a glance: public record versus dramatization

Subject What is established in the cited sources How to read the show’s version
Maggie and Paul’s deaths They were killed in June 2021; the deaths and prosecution form the real case at the story’s center. (AP) The underlying event is real; scene details still need separate corroboration.
Boat crash and who was driving TIME reports Matney’s belief about the driver drew on conversations with people present; Paul died before trial. Keep the belief attributed to Matney; do not treat it as a court finding.
Bahamas trip TIME reports the trip occurred in 2017, before the 2019 boat crash. The chronology shown is reordered.
Alex Murdaugh murder case The 2023 convictions were reversed by the South Carolina Supreme Court on May 13, 2026, and the case was remanded for a new trial. Older coverage that calls the convictions current is out of date.
Private dialogue, motive and scene sequence The cited reporting does not verify every scene or provide a complete scene audit. Treat these elements as dramatic interpretation unless independently corroborated.

How much of the story is true?

The series has a factual foundation in the killings, the public case and reporting about the Murdaughs, but it also arranges and interprets events for television. The Bahamas timeline offers one documented example of a change; the public evidence cited here does not support a blanket verdict on every scene. For legal developments, rely on the South Carolina Supreme Court’s opinion and docket rather than the drama or older accounts of the 2023 verdict.
