Spoilers for all six episodes of Last Samurai Standing, especially Episode 6. Season 1 does not reveal a winner of the Kodoku. Shujiro Saga and Futaba Katsuki are still headed for Tokyo, the siblings are moving to reunite against their former trainer Gentosai, and the final scenes point to a political conspiracy that has not yet been explained. Netflix renewed the series for Season 2 on December 19, 2025, but has not announced a premiere date.
What happens at the end of Season 1?
The finale ends the season in the middle of the contest, not at its finish. Shujiro and Futaba set out for Tokyo after a mysterious summons. They still have to survive the Kodoku and its remaining checkpoints, while trying to discover who is behind the deadly game. Netflix’s official Season 2 announcement likewise describes the game as still raging at the end of the first season.

Meanwhile, Shujiro’s adopted siblings—Iroha, Shikura, and Sansuke—resolve to reunite with him and confront Gentosai, the former trainer who is hunting them. Their plan leaves the family’s fractured relationships unresolved: the season does not settle whether Iroha still wants to kill Shujiro for leaving, or whether the siblings can stand together against Gentosai.
Who wins the Kodoku?
No winner is announced. The contest remains in progress, with Tokyo and the final checkpoints still ahead. The season’s “End of Chapter One” framing is literal: it pauses the story before the game’s outcome, rather than revealing who survives or reaches the end.

The stakes depend on the game’s rules. Netflix’s series guide places the story in 1878 and explains that competitors travel from Kyoto to Tokyo within a month, passing seven checkpoints by presenting required numbers of wooden tags. They obtain tags by killing rivals. Until the journey and checkpoints are completed, there is no basis for naming a Kodoku victor.
Did Kyojin betray Shujiro?
His actions look like betrayal, but his allegiance is not confirmed. Kyojin appears to give Gentosai information about the people he is hunting, putting Shujiro, Futaba, and Iroha at risk. The finale does not reveal why he did it or whether he is truly working against them. His motive and loyalties remain open questions, not a solved twist.

What does the final Kawaji scene mean?
The scene signals that the contest has sponsors and political stakes beyond the guards and competitors. Kawaji passes Shujiro in a carriage, and the story has already positioned Shujiro’s allies within the imperial government. That combination points toward a future collision between Shujiro and a powerful political figure, but the finale neither shows their confrontation nor fully explains Kawaji’s plan. Read it as a setup for a larger conspiracy, not a complete reveal.
Why does the Meiji-era setting matter?
The former samurai are trying to survive after losing their social position and livelihood. Netflix’s guide sets the series in 1878 and notes that sword-carrying was outlawed by then; TIME’s ending coverage situates the action in the Meiji period, a decade after the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. The Kodoku turns the old warrior code into a tool of coercion: men who have been pushed out of their former lives are forced to fight for survival.

Will there be a Season 2?
Yes. Netflix officially renewed Last Samurai Standing on December 19, 2025. In the announcement, writer-director Michihito Fujii said the series had been greenlit for a second season. Lead actor, producer, and action choreographer Junichi Okada said the team hoped to make the next season “even more energetic and action-packed.” Those statements confirm the renewal and creative intent, not a release date or what will happen in the story.

The series adapts Shogo Imamura’s historical-fiction novel Ikusagami; Netflix also notes that the novel was serialized as a manga in Kodansha’s Morning magazine. Kodansha USA lists Last Samurai Standing as an ongoing manga available in print and digital formats, with six English-catalog volumes listed at the time of the cited series catalog. The Volume 2 listing is one place to explore the related story, but the available listings do not establish which volume or chapter corresponds to the TV finale. Treat the manga as related source material, not a verified scene-by-scene continuation.
