Val Kilmer made his feature-film debut in Top Secret! (1984), moved from comedy into science-fiction with Real Genius (1985), and broke through as Iceman in Top Gun (1986). This is a selected filmography, not a complete credits database; the television examples in particular are not exhaustive.

Where to start: a genre-led watchlist
For a compact introduction, choose based on the kind of performance you want rather than treating any single ranking as definitive:
- Comedy: Top Secret! for broad parody or Real Genius for a campus science comedy.
- Fantasy: Willow for Madmartigan’s roguish adventurer.
- Music biography: The Doors for Kilmer as Jim Morrison.
- Western: Tombstone for Doc Holliday.
- Superhero: Batman Forever for his portrayal of Bruce Wayne and Batman.
- Crime drama: Heat for a serious ensemble crime film, or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for a comic mystery.
- Return to a signature role: Top Gun: Maverick for his later appearance as Iceman.
Animation, documentaries, and self-portrayal
Kilmer’s screen work was not limited to live-action characters. In the animated feature The Prince of Egypt (1998), he voiced Moses. The documentary Val (2021), about his life and career, is a distinct kind of screen appearance: it draws on personal footage and presents Kilmer’s own story rather than a fictional role. The Associated Press described the film as a documentary about his life and career in its April 2, 2025 retrospective: AP’s overview of notable Val Kilmer films.

Was Val Kilmer in the 2022 Willow series?
No: Kilmer did not appear onscreen in the 2022 Willow series. Lucasfilm’s April 2, 2025 tribute explains that his son, Jack Kilmer, recorded brief lines for Madmartigan, which were combined with Val Kilmer’s voice. The series’ use of his voice should not be described as an onscreen appearance. How complete is this list?
This guide is selective by design. AFI’s cast catalog is useful for verifying many feature-film roles, but its coverage is bounded by its catalog scope. The official biography emphasizes career highlights, while the Television Academy page gives selected television examples rather than a complete list. The sources cited here therefore support the featured titles and roles, but not a definitive count of all Kilmer credits or every TV episode.
