Craig Mack, the rapper whose 1994 hit “Flava in Ya Ear” helped launch Bad Boy Records, died in Walterboro, South Carolina, on March 12, 2018. He was 47. Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey told the Associated Press that Mack appeared to have died of natural causes; the AP report did not specify a medical cause.

What was reported about Craig Mack’s death?

The Associated Press reported that Mack died at his home in Walterboro. Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said the death appeared to be from natural causes. The AP account did not identify a specific medical cause. The Guardian separately reported heart failure, a more specific account that should not be mistaken for a cause named by the coroner in the AP report.

Mack was born May 10, 1970, and was 47 when he died. The Guardian corrected an earlier report that gave his age as 46.

How did Craig Mack become known?

Raised on Long Island, Mack first recorded under the name MC EZ. In 1994, he released “Flava in Ya Ear” as the first single on Sean Combs’ Bad Boy Records. The track appeared on his debut album, Project: Funk da World, and became his signature song.

The single reached No. 1 on Billboard’s rap songs chart and No. 9 on the Hot 100, according to the New York Times obituary republished by WRAL. It was named single of the year at the 1995 Source Awards and earned a Grammy nomination for best rap solo performance—not a Grammy win. The Associated Press described it as a platinum hit.

What is the difference between the original and the remix?

The original “Flava in Ya Ear” was Mack’s breakout single. Its remix was a separate recording featuring The Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J and Rampage. That lineup helped make the remix a notable part of the song’s lasting place in accounts of 1990s hip-hop.

What did Craig Mack do after his breakthrough?

Mack released his second album, Operation: Get Down, in 1997. He later stepped away from the mainstream music industry and devoted himself to religion. Reports describe him as living quietly in South Carolina in the years before his death.
