It is not a Dogme 95 film: Dogme 95 is a separate filmmaking movement founded in 1995.
What is Dogma about?
Directed by Kevin Smith, Dogma follows Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon), two fallen angels seeking to return to Heaven. They believe a loophole in Catholic doctrine will let them do so; if they succeed, the consequences would challenge the idea of divine infallibility. The Cannes catalogue summarizes the film’s premise and stakes in its film entry.

The official Dogma site frames the film around faith, salvation and human experience. Its irreverence is part of a specific religious satire built around the angels’ fictional plan; the premise alone should not be taken as a claim that the film rejects all religious belief.
Is Dogma connected to Dogme 95?
No. The similar names refer to different things. Dogma is Smith’s 1999 film. Dogme 95 was a filmmaking movement founded by Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. Its 1995 manifesto, “The Vow of Chastity,” set out production restrictions; the BFI’s overview describes rules including location shooting, handheld cameras and avoiding studio lighting, and says the movement was officially disbanded in 2005. These rules do not describe Dogma’s production.
