TiVo made the digital video recorder feel less like a timer attached to a television and more like a way to take control of watching: record programs, organize them, and play them back on your schedule. Its later Stream 4K carried the brand’s discovery pitch into streaming, combining apps and live TV in one interface. That history matters even though TiVo’s official page now marks Stream 4K “Product Unavailable.”
What was TiVo, and why was it different from a VCR?
TiVo became closely identified with the consumer DVR: a device that let viewers record television digitally and manage playback rather than arrange their viewing around broadcast times. The distinction was not simply the recording medium. TiVo’s significance was also the experience it put around recorded television—finding programs, keeping them organized, and watching them when convenient.
TiVo’s brand retrospective describes its original DVR as having “revolutionized what it meant to watch TV.” That is the company’s own account of its legacy, but it captures why TiVo belongs in a consumer-electronics history: it helped make time-shifted TV a recognizable, consumer-facing behavior. A 2011 corporate release called TiVo the developer of the “first commercially available DVR”; that is an attributed corporate claim, not an independently adjudicated first-place finding.
How TiVo’s focus shifted from recording to discovery
As viewing moved beyond conventional television schedules, TiVo described its strategy as a “content-first approach” that brought traditional and streaming entertainment together. In this framing, the central problem was no longer only when to record a program, but how to find something to watch across different sources. This is TiVo’s stated positioning, not evidence that its interface outperformed other platforms.

Xperi’s fiscal 2023 annual report described a North American legacy TiVo DVR subscription business and TiVo Mini companion devices for whole-home use. It also placed TiVo OS and Stream 4K within the broader media-platform business and named Roku, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, and streaming-enabled televisions among competitors. That filing is useful corporate context, but it does not establish the status or availability of every TiVo product in 2026.
What did the TiVo Stream 4K do?
Stream 4K was a small HDMI-connected streamer announced for retail availability on May 6, 2020. Instead of recording broadcast programs to watch later, it brought streaming services and live programming into a single viewing interface. Xperi’s launch announcement described these features:

The launch announcement said no monthly TiVo subscription was required, while Sling TV and other services could require separate subscriptions. These are launch-era descriptions and terms, not a guarantee of present-day app compatibility, service integration, or subscription conditions.
At launch, then-TiVo president and CEO Dave Shull said Stream 4K was intended to make it easier to “find, watch and enjoy” entertainment across services. That quote reflects the product’s 2020 pitch: a recognizable TiVo search-and-discovery layer applied to streaming, rather than a DVR’s recording-and-playback model.

Can you still buy a TiVo Stream 4K?
TiVo’s official Stream 4K page currently says “Product Unavailable,” though it retains product and support information. The page’s continued existence should not be taken as confirmation that TiVo sells new units. A used or marketplace listing is a separate purchase decision: check the seller, device condition, current app support, software maintenance, and return terms before paying. Current stock and seller reliability are not established by TiVo’s product page.
Is TiVo still making DVRs?
The available corporate materials establish that a legacy TiVo DVR subscription business existed in North America in Xperi’s fiscal 2023 reporting; they do not settle the full state of DVR manufacturing or sales in 2026. TiVo’s history and current product availability should therefore be treated separately: the brand remains strongly associated with DVR-era viewing, but these sources do not support a blanket claim that new TiVo DVRs are currently being made or sold.
There is also a historical compatibility wrinkle for retail cable DVRs. TiVo’s 2016 SEC filing said some devices depended on CableCARDs and warned that cable operators ceasing support could limit functionality. That is a dated constraint for certain retail cable DVR configurations, not a universal description of every TiVo device or cable provider today.

The support table distinguishes models within product families, so the broad categories above are a starting point rather than a substitute for checking TiVo’s exact compatibility entry. TiVo Mini was described in Xperi’s 2023 annual report as a whole-home companion to TiVo DVRs; confirm host-device compatibility before treating one as a current setup or purchase option.
