Elon Musk and actor Talulah Riley married twice and divorced twice: they married in 2010, divorced in 2012, remarried in 2013, and ended their second marriage in 2016. Riley later said remarrying felt natural after they had been used to being husband and wife. Their public comments point to lasting affection and friendship, but they do not establish what their private relationship is like today.
How their relationship unfolded
The documented timeline shows two marriages, two divorces, and a withdrawn divorce filing:
- 2010: Musk and Riley married.
- 2012: They divorced for the first time.
- 2013: They remarried.
- 2014: Musk filed for divorce, then withdrew the filing.
- 2016: Riley filed to end their second marriage. A joint statement reported at the time said they had been separated for six months. The Independent’s account of their marriages and divorces covers the sequence and Riley’s explanation of why they remarried.
The 2014 filing was not a third divorce: it was withdrawn, before the couple’s second divorce in 2016.
Why did they marry again?
Riley said that, at the time, being together without being married felt strange after they had been accustomed to being husband and wife. As she put it, “I suppose the reason to get remarried was just because it felt silly to be together unmarried after having been married.” That reported explanation describes how Riley understood the decision; it does not establish every reason behind their reconciliation.

What did they say after the second divorce?
Their 2016 joint statement said they had decided to end the marriage after six months apart and “will remain friends,” according to the Press Association report published by The Guardian.
Riley spoke warmly about Musk again in a 2022 interview, describing a “very deep love and connection” and calling him “a great friend.” Those are public statements about their bond, not evidence of how frequently they communicated or what their private relationship involved. Are they still close?
Public evidence supports saying that they remained affectionate and friendly at the times described. In 2024, Riley married actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster. The Los Angeles Times reported their marriage; The Independent, citing Riley’s interview with The Times, reported that Musk attended the wedding and that Riley still loved him. The Los Angeles Times report covers the wedding, while The Independent’s account reports Musk’s attendance and Riley’s comments.
That is not enough to establish how close they are now, whether they are in regular contact, or how either describes the relationship privately. The careful answer is that their public remarks and reported interactions have been warm and friendly; their present-day private closeness is not independently established.
