Superman has no single, fixed roster of villains across comics and film. The clearest way to understand his opponents is to separate their continuities: Lex Luthor is the human strategist, comic-book Ultraman is an evil Superman from another Earth, and the 2025 film gives Ultraman a substantially different take. The Engineer is also in the film, though DC’s official feature establishes her role more clearly than her background.

Why Superman’s villains depend on the version

Superman has appeared in stories spanning many decades and continuities, so a name associated with him does not always mean the same origin, motives, or role. A comic-book counterpart cannot automatically be treated as the film version, and a character listed among Superman’s related characters is not, by that fact alone, explained as a villain in every story.

This guide focuses on what DC’s official character profiles and its feature on the 2025 film establish. It is a selected guide, not an exhaustive catalogue of every antagonist in every Superman story.

Who is Lex Luthor, and what makes him Superman’s greatest enemy?

Lex Luthor is Superman’s defining human nemesis: an egomaniacal genius and billionaire industrialist whose power comes from intellect, money, and influence rather than superpowers. DC describes their conflict as personal, public, and political, and identifies Luthor as the CEO of LexCorp. His first appearance was in Action Comics #23 (1940), according to DC’s official Lex Luthor profile.

That makes Luthor a different kind of threat from an opponent who can simply match Superman physically. DC’s profile frames the rivalry as a clash between Superman’s example and Luthor’s pride, ambition, and resentment. Luthor can challenge Superman’s standing and influence without possessing the same kind of powers.

Who is Ultraman in Superman?

There are two versions to keep separate. In DC’s description of the comics character, Ultraman is an evil version of Superman from another Earth, first introduced in Justice League of America #29 (1964). DC’s July 2025 feature says the film version departs substantially from that established depiction; the comic origin should not be assumed to apply to the movie character.

Version What DC establishes What not to assume
Comics An evil Superman from another Earth; first appeared in Justice League of America #29 (1964). DC’s July 2025 film feature gives this comics description. That every later use of the name shares one unchanged history.
Superman (2025) DC’s feature says this version is a substantial departure from the comics depiction. That the film character has the comics origin or identity simply because he is called Ultraman.

DC.com contributor Joshua Lapin-Bertone characterized the movie interpretation in the July 14, 2025 feature as “a far cry” from the comics character and arguably the biggest liberty taken by the filmmakers. That is Lapin-Bertone’s editorial assessment, not a statement attributed to director James Gunn.

Who is The Engineer in Superman?

DC’s July 2025 feature links Lex’s organization PlanetWatch to Stormwatch, the WildStorm team on which The Engineer has served. It also says Superman and Mister Terrific battle The Engineer and Ultraman. Those details establish her association and role in the film, but the official pages consulted do not provide a full biography or enough detail to explain her origin, abilities, or motives. It would be misleading to fill those gaps with assumptions drawn from another version or continuity.

How is Brainiac different from Lex Luthor?

Brainiac represents an alien technological threat rather than a human rival. DC describes him as an alien artificial intelligence usually associated with Colu, driven by a pursuit of knowledge that can put enormous numbers of lives at risk. His first appearance was in Action Comics #242 (1958), according to DC’s official Brainiac profile.

The contrast is useful: Luthor is a human industrialist whose intellect, wealth, and political influence fuel a personal rivalry; Brainiac is an extraterrestrial intelligence whose pursuit of knowledge can endanger lives on a vast scale. DC notes that Brainiac’s artificial mind and body have changed over the decades, so those features should not be treated as one unchanging design or origin.

Are Bizarro, Doomsday, and Zod also Superman villains?

DC’s official Superman profile lists Bizarro, Doomsday, and Zod among characters related to Superman. That establishes an association, not a complete account of their histories or a single villain role that applies to every continuity. In particular, the profile consulted does not establish which Bizarro version or story should stand in for all the others, so this guide does not assign him one definitive origin or motivation.

What the 2025 film information confirms

DC’s official Superman (2025) page identifies James Gunn as writer and director, David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. It lists the film’s U.S. theatrical and IMAX release as July 11, 2025, and international release beginning July 9, 2025. Those are release dates, not information about where the film is currently streaming.
