National Treasure 3 is in active development, but it is not yet a confirmed production. What is the latest National Treasure 3 update?
The most substantial update came from director Jon Turteltaub at a live recording of the National Treasure Hunt podcast in August 2026. TheWrap reported that a script was in the works with Disney’s endorsement. Turteltaub said the script had reached a state he liked and that the studio’s response was that it “sounds like a movie we can make.” That is Turteltaub describing Disney’s reaction, not a direct public statement from the studio. TheWrap’s August 22, 2026 report has the latest detailed account.

At the event, Turteltaub called the project real, then cautioned that it was “Hollywood real,” meaning circumstances could still derail it. Variety’s report the next day corroborated that a script was in the works and quoted him saying, “to whatever extent we can, everyone’s back.” Both outlets said Disney and Cage representatives had not immediately responded to requests for comment. Variety’s August 23, 2026 report likewise describes talks, not a final cast announcement.
Is Nicolas Cage confirmed to return?
No. The reports indicate interest and discussions, not a signed commitment. In September 2025, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told TheWrap that “We’re getting closer on that one” and said the intention was for Turteltaub and Cage to return. In August 2026, Turteltaub spoke of original stars being in talks and expressed the hope that the cast would return as far as possible. Neither statement confirms Cage has signed on. Bruckheimer’s September 30, 2025 comments are a useful earlier marker, but the newer account still stops short of a deal.

What has not been announced?
The cited reports do not give a production start, filming schedule, release date, or complete cast list. They also do not establish a signed agreement for Cage. Those details remain unsettled in the coverage; a script and discussions are not the same as a film entering production.

The planned film would follow National Treasure (2004) and National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007), both directed by Turteltaub and starring Cage as historian and treasure hunter Ben Gates. In the first film, Gates pursues a treasure tied to the Declaration of Independence; in the sequel, he tries to clear his family’s name after a page from John Wilkes Booth’s diary implicates an ancestor in Lincoln’s assassination. TheWrap’s August 2026 report gives worldwide grosses of $347 million for the first movie and $459 million for the second; those are the outlet’s reported figures, not newly audited totals.
