On January 12, 2024, Rolling Stone’s Jeff Ihaza highlighted ten rap artists and projects he was excited to hear that year. The list mixed reported plans and public teases with outright hopes: several entries had a named album, but not every artist had announced a release date—or even a confirmed project. Read it as a snapshot of anticipation, not a record of what ultimately came out.
How to read the 2024 forecast
The original preview appeared on Rolling Stone India and was labeled “From Rolling Stone US.” Its picks ranged from projects with titles and rollout activity to possibilities inferred from hints or framed as the writer’s hopes. The distinctions matter: a teaser can signal activity without confirming a finished album or a release date.
The table below summarizes what the January 12 article said at the time. “Named project” means the preview identified a title or a specific collaboration; it does not mean that the project was confirmed for release in 2024.
| Artist | Project identified in the preview | Contemporaneous clue or rationale | Certainty in the preview |
|---|---|---|---|
| A$AP Rocky | Don’t Be Dumb | Described as a long-awaited follow-up to 2018’s Testing. Rocky had told Dazed in October that he had been experimenting and felt it was his best work yet; “Our De$tiny” and “D.M.B.” were also cited. | A named album and reported comments; timing remained an expectation. The idea that fatherhood would shape the album was the writer’s speculation. |
| Future | A prospective project with Metro Boomin | Future had cleared his Instagram posts; the preview also pointed to earlier teasing, a studio photo shared by Metro Boomin, and hints from both artists shortly before publication. | Anticipation around a possible collaboration, not a dated confirmation. |
| Playboi Carti | I Am Music | The article reported that Carti had been teasing his third studio album and noted a rollout of singles and videos, including “Backrooms,” featuring Travis Scott. | A named, teased album; the preview is evidence of what was reported then, not of later release status. |
| Baby Keem | A possible solo follow-up or a full collaboration with Kendrick Lamar | The pair’s “The Hillbillies,” its video, and their performance as The Hillbillies gave the writer reason to imagine more music together. | Two hopes—a follow-up to The Melodic Blue or a joint project—not a confirmed album plan. |
| Megan Thee Stallion | An anticipated independent album; no title stated | The January article reported that she had announced an independent release after leaving her label, and cited “Cobra” and planned festival appearances as context. | A reported intention, without a title or date in the preview. |
| Karrahbooo | A hoped-for full project; no title stated | The preview pointed to her freestyles and December single “Running Late.” | The project was the writer’s hope, not a reported album announcement. |
| Lil Yachty | A possible rap-focused follow-up; no title stated | The writer contrasted Let’s Start Here with Yachty’s other recent rap releases and anticipated a return to rap. | An editorial prediction, not a confirmed project or date. |
| Flo Milli | Fine Ho, Stay | The article described the album as delayed from 2023 and highlighted “Never Lose Me,” including an alternate version with Lil Yachty. | A named, delayed album that the preview expected in 2024; no release date was established there. |
| Ice Spice | A possible album-mode project; no title stated | A new-music snippet and a meme lyric prompted speculation. | A possible clue, not a confirmed album announcement. |
| Drake | A possible release; no title stated | The preview recalled Drake saying he would step away to focus on his health, then noted the “Scary Hours” edition of For All the Dogs. | The possibility of another release was speculation; the article reported no firm 2024 album announcement. |
The ten picks, in context
A$AP Rocky: a long-awaited album with an open-ended sound
Don’t Be Dumb had the clearest backstory of the ten picks: the preview presented it as the follow-up to Testing, which had arrived in 2018, and connected Rocky’s comments about experimentation to the album’s appeal. The singles named in the article offered listeners concrete music to consider, but the article did not establish a firm release date. Its suggestion that becoming a father might influence the record was interpretation, not a confirmed description of the album.

Future and Metro Boomin: signals of a possible reunion
The anticipated collaboration rested on social-media clues and past teasing, rather than a publicly specified date. A cleared account, studio image, or cryptic post can fuel expectations, but none alone proves that a joint album is complete or scheduled. Ihaza treated the possibility as exciting, not settled.
Playboi Carti: a title and rollout, but still a forecast
I Am Music stood out because the preview gave the project a name and pointed to singles and music videos, including “Backrooms” with Travis Scott. Those details made Carti’s entry more concrete than a hope built on a snippet, but they still describe the rollout as it was reported on January 12, 2024. The preview does not establish what happened afterward.

Baby Keem: solo return or Kendrick Lamar collaboration?
Rather than report a confirmed album, the article set out two possibilities it wanted to hear: a solo follow-up to The Melodic Blue or a full project with Kendrick Lamar. “The Hillbillies” and the pair’s performance under that name supplied the contemporaneous context. The distinction is important: existing collaboration gave the idea a basis, but did not amount to an announcement of a joint album.
Megan Thee Stallion: an independent release on the horizon
The preview framed Megan’s expected album around her reported move to release independently after leaving her label. It also mentioned “Cobra” and planned festival performances as signs of activity around her next chapter. The article did not give the album a title or firm date, so its entry is best understood as a reported intention rather than a fully specified release plan.

Karrahbooo: a case for a full project, not an announced one
Freestyles and the December single “Running Late” were the reasons Ihaza wanted to hear a larger body of work from Karrahbooo. The preview did not name an album or report a release announcement; the full-project idea belonged to the writer’s hopes.
Lil Yachty: the possibility of another rap-focused record
After Let’s Start Here, the article imagined a rap-centered follow-up by setting that album against Yachty’s other recent rap releases. It was a stylistic prediction, not a claim that a particular album had been announced. The appeal of this pick was the prospect of another turn in an artist’s direction.
Flo Milli: a delayed title with a song already drawing attention
Fine Ho, Stay was described as having slipped from 2023, giving this entry a more specific project than the purely speculative picks. Ihaza singled out “Never Lose Me” and its alternate version with Lil Yachty as reasons for anticipation. The preview’s expectation of a 2024 arrival should not be mistaken for proof that the timing came to pass.
Ice Spice: a snippet that invited interpretation
The article connected a new-music snippet and a meme lyric to the possibility that Ice Spice was entering “album mode.” That was an inference from a small clue, not a confirmed album title, schedule, or announcement. The entry captures how even a brief preview of unreleased music can prompt speculation about a larger project.

Drake: speculation after a pause and a bonus edition
Drake’s entry drew on two contrasting signals: his stated plan to step away to focus on health and the subsequent “Scary Hours” edition of For All the Dogs. Ihaza wondered whether more music might follow, but the article reported no firm announcement of another 2024 album. It was the least definite kind of forecast: a possibility inferred from an artist’s recent actions.

The ten picks are useful as a record of what one music writer found promising on January 12, 2024. They are not a verified release calendar or a retrospective account of which projects arrived that year. The preview gives no basis for treating every entry as equally certain: named albums, reported intentions, public hints, and personal hopes appear side by side. Any claim about eventual release dates or current availability needs a separate, appropriately current source.
