Echo gives Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk a vivid place in Maya Lopez’s story, and its grounded approach makes the character legible to newcomers. But as of October 4, 2026, it is no longer D’Onofrio’s latest Marvel showcase: he also stars as Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again seasons one and two.
What Echo adds to D’Onofrio’s Kingpin
In Echo, Fisk is not simply a familiar villain dropping into another Marvel story. He is bound to Maya Lopez’s personal history and remains a force in the conflict she is trying to escape. Marvel describes the five-episode series as following Maya after the events of Hawkeye, as she returns to confront her family and legacy while Fisk’s criminal empire pursues her. Marvel’s series listing and Disney’s launch announcement frame the show as a street-level, character-driven story.

That context gives D’Onofrio a different dramatic relationship to play. Maya is not just an opponent in Fisk’s path; she is someone whose history with him changes how his power and vulnerability appear. Marvel producer Richie Palmer described Fisk as changed after Maya humbled him at the end of Hawkeye, and said Echo reveals more of his emotionality. That is Palmer’s reading of the character, rather than a claim about how every viewer responds.
D’Onofrio has described the performance’s uneasy balance in similar terms. In a January 3, 2024 profile by The Washington Post, he said viewers might feel sympathy for Fisk at moments and then see him as a monster. The tension matters: the character can be emotionally comprehensible without being excused.

Can you watch Echo without seeing Hawkeye or Daredevil?
Yes. Marvel presented Echo as a self-contained entry under its Marvel Spotlight banner, designed to tell a grounded story without requiring viewers to follow every MCU installment. Executive producer Brad Winderbaum said people who had not watched Hawkeye could start from scratch because the series would provide what they needed. Disney’s January 8, 2024 announcement records that assurance.
D’Onofrio likewise said the show’s tone and writing let him present Fisk to viewers new to the character, not only to people who had seen the original Daredevil. In a January 4, 2024 interview with ComicBook.com, he explained that Echo could introduce Kingpin on its own terms. Prior viewing can add context to Fisk’s history, but it is not a prerequisite to understanding his place in Maya’s story.
Why the show’s grounded style matters
Echo was Marvel Studios’ first series released under the Marvel Spotlight label, its first TV-MA series, its first simultaneous full-season drop, and its first series to stream on both Disney+ and Hulu at launch. Those are launch-era distinctions announced in January 2024, not a guarantee of present-day availability in any country. Disney’s announcement calls the series self-contained and street-level.

The show’s visual approach also serves its characters rather than treating communication as incidental. Director and executive producer Sydney Freeland, speaking to Disney on January 9, 2024, described the relationship between American Sign Language and facial expression: “The hands are the text, and the face is the subtext. You need to see those two things together to understand what a person’s feeling.” Disney’s production account discusses ASL preparation and consultation and representation efforts around Indigenous culture.
Is Echo still D’Onofrio’s latest Marvel showcase?
No. The original headline’s use of “latest” was time-sensitive. Marvel’s official listing for Daredevil: Born Again season one gives its release date as March 4, 2025, and Marvel’s season-two listing identifies D’Onofrio as Fisk in a 2026 season. As of October 4, 2026, Echo is a recent and important showcase, but not his latest one.

The more enduring point is what Echo does differently: it places Fisk inside Maya’s intimate, street-level conflict and uses that relationship to expose more of his emotional contradictions. That makes the series a useful entry point for new viewers and a distinct chapter in D’Onofrio’s ongoing portrayal, without requiring a claim that it is his definitive or best performance.
