What did the medical examiner determine about Kate Spade’s death?
Contemporaneous reports by the Associated Press and The Washington Post said the New York City chief medical examiner determined that Spade’s cause of death was hanging and the manner of death was suicide. The reports were published June 7, 2018. The original medical examiner case file and death certificate were not available in the sources reviewed, so the finding here is attributed to those reports.
When was the finding reported?
- June 5, 2018: Spade was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment in Manhattan, aged 55.
- June 7, 2018: News reports carried the medical examiner’s determination.
Some early coverage described the death as an apparent suicide while the investigation was ongoing. That preliminary wording is distinct from the later determination attributed to the medical examiner.
What did her husband say?
In a statement reported by WRAL/CNN after her death, Andy Spade said Kate had depression and anxiety and had been seeking medical help. He described her as having been “actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives.” These are Andy Spade’s statements about his wife; they are not a medical examiner’s explanation of the death or evidence of a single cause.
