Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist said they decided together to divorce after difficult conversations about how to combine their homes and family lives. They announced the decision on Good Morning America on April 12, 2024, just over three months after their televised wedding. Their public explanation focused on living arrangements and the lives they had already built—not on a single reported incident.
What Turner and Nist said when they announced the divorce
In their joint Good Morning America interview, Turner described “a number of heart-to-heart conversations” in which they examined their situation and living arrangements. He said they reached a mutual conclusion that it was time to dissolve the marriage, and that living apart was best for each person’s happiness. ABC’s interview also quoted Turner saying, “The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations, it’s been how dedicated both of us are to our families.”
Nist said they had looked at homes in South Carolina and considered New Jersey, but did not settle on where to live. The decision, as they described it, came after they were unable to find a living arrangement that worked for both of them.
Why they said combining their lives was difficult
In additional footage from the interview, reported by Us Weekly on April 13, Nist said they were older, already had homes, children and grandchildren, and wanted to be together immediately. She said those circumstances played a major role in the breakup. She and Turner said they did not see a commuter marriage—living apart while maintaining the relationship—as an option for them. Turner also said couples counseling was useful as they worked toward their decision. Us Weekly’s account of the extended interview reports those additional remarks.

Asked by Juju Chang, “How do you give up after three months?”, Nist’s answer centered on those practical realities: established homes and family responsibilities, alongside the couple’s wish to live together right away. Their comments explain how they understood the decision; they do not establish every private factor behind it.
How the marriage lasted just over three months
Turner and Nist met on ABC’s The Golden Bachelor and married in a televised ceremony in early January 2024. They announced their decision to divorce on April 12. That makes “three months” an approximate description: the interval from the early-January wedding to the announcement was just over three months, not an exact three-month anniversary. The Los Angeles Times’ account provides the timeline and context.

What Nist said after the announcement
On April 15, Nist thanked people who had contacted her and reflected on what the experience meant. “It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, something I never expected to happen at this point in my life and I truly thought it was going to last forever,” she said. “It turns out, even at the age of 70, you don’t know everything.”
She asked people who felt confused or angry to respond with kindness, said she took positive things from the experience, and encouraged people to stay open to future experiences and love. She also wrote that “sometimes things don’t go the way you planned and that’s okay.” ABC reported her follow-up message.

Their stated reasons were practical and personal: separate homes, family commitments, uncertainty about where to settle, and a desire to live together rather than maintain a commuter relationship. Turner called the decision mutual, and both described counseling as part of the process. Their remarks do not support claims that one location, family member, or undisclosed event was the sole cause.
