What Trump said about Rob and Michele Reiner
In a Truth Social post, Trump attributed the Reiners’ deaths to what he described as Rob Reiner’s “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” That was Trump’s claim, not an independently established explanation of their deaths. Variety Australia reported the substance of the post and Kimmel’s response.
How Jimmy Kimmel responded
Kimmel addressed the post in his Monday-night monologue on Dec. 15. He began by reflecting on a difficult news weekend and calling for compassion and leadership, saying: “What we need in a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental health care, is compassion and leadership.”
He said he initially thought Trump’s post was fake, then condemned its tone. “It’s so hateful and vile,” Kimmel said. He also rejected Trump’s description of what had happened: “His description of what happened of course is not at all what happened.”

Kimmel said he knew Reiner personally and connected that relationship to his decision to speak out. “I know from my personal interactions with Rob Reiner that he would want us to keep pointing out the loathsome atrocities that continue to ooze out of this sick and irresponsible man’s mouth,” he said. The Guardian’s account and TheWrap’s report covered the monologue.

Trump defended his comments to reporters at the White House later on Dec. 15. The Guardian and Variety reported that he called Reiner “deranged” and said, “I thought he was very bad for our country.” Those remarks came after Kimmel’s broadcast response; they were a separate part of the exchange, not part of the monologue.
