How O.J. Simpson’s Income and Estate Changed After His Death

O.J. Simpson’s later-life income was described as pensions. After his death, estate property and creditor claims became the focus—but acceptance of Fred Goldman’s $58 million claim did not mean it was paid.

O.J. Simpson is not earning money now: he died in April 2024. In his later years, he said he lived on pensions, including NFL and Screen Actors Guild pensions that the Los Angeles Times reported were protected from seizure while he was alive. Since his death, the financial story has shifted to his estate, property sales and unpaid civil claims—not ongoing personal income.

What income did Simpson have while he was alive?

Simpson said that he lived on pensions in his later years. The Los Angeles Times reported that his NFL and Screen Actors Guild pensions were protected from seizure under federal law while he was alive. The reporting cited here does not establish a verified pension amount or a complete accounting of his income, so a precise total cannot be stated.

Why was he still pursued over the civil judgment?

A civil jury found Simpson liable in 1997 for the deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson and awarded their families $33.5 million. That figure later grew with interest, according to the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times. Pension protections during Simpson’s life did not erase the judgment; they limited what creditors could seize from those pension benefits.

What happened to Simpson’s property after his death?

Estate assets are different from income: selling property can produce a one-time sum for an estate, but it is not ongoing earnings for a person who has died.

A proposed auction in 2024

In July 2024, a Nevada probate judge approved a proposal to auction selected possessions, including Simpson’s Heisman Trophy, golf clubs, an SUV and his driver’s license. The reported purpose was to help pay part of the civil claim. The Los Angeles Times report did not say how much the auction would raise or establish final proceeds.

Collectibles and the book

The Goldman family took possession of Simpson’s If I Did It manuscript, the Los Angeles Times reported. In 2018, the family also pursued money Simpson had received for signing jerseys, helmets and posters connected to a television series; it had to identify who paid him to pursue those proceeds. That history shows collectible-related payments were investigated, but it does not establish ongoing book income, continuing royalties or money available to the estate now.

Does accepting a $58 million claim mean the family was paid?

No. In November 2025, Simpson’s estate accepted Fred Goldman’s $58 million claim, the Associated Press reported. The estate had previously faced a $117 million demand before accepting the smaller claim. Acceptance establishes the claim in the estate process; it does not show that the money was paid.

The AP said the accepted claim far exceeded the estate’s assets. Executor Malcolm LaVergne said he hoped to round up $500,000 to $1 million in total assets, and described his aim as a voluntary payment, not a $58 million payment plus interest. Goldman family attorney Michaelle Rafferty said acceptance “does not constitute payment.” The figures therefore describe a claim and an executor’s estimate, not a completed recovery for the family.

What remains unknown about the estate?

The reporting cited here does not establish the estate’s final inventory, the realized proceeds from the proposed auction, or the ultimate distribution to creditors. It also does not verify claims of hidden wealth. The responsible distinction is between what was reported—pension income during Simpson’s life, efforts to liquidate estate property, and acceptance of a large creditor claim—and what has not been established: a final accounting or payout.
