Spoilers for The Gilded Age season 3 finale, “My Mind Is Made Up.” The character named in the pre-finale argument about who should die in episode 8 was George Russell. But the August 4, 2025 TechRadar piece was speculation, not a report: when the finale aired on August 10, George survived. The episode’s real shock was that his brush with death makes him question his marriage and life with Bertha.
Who was supposed to die in The Gilded Age episode 8?
George Russell was the proposed casualty. The premise came from a TechRadar opinion piece published August 4, 2025, after season 3 episode 7 ended with a gunman shooting at George. It argued for a shocking death as a way to propel the story into season 4; it did not reveal an outcome that had already happened. TechRadar’s pre-finale argument

What actually happens to George in the season 3 finale?
George lives. In “My Mind Is Made Up,” the family’s regular doctor is unavailable, so Dr. William Kirkland operates on George in the Russell dining hall. Marian and household staff help; Kirkland removes the bullet and saves him. TheWrap’s account of the surgery describes the scene’s added stakes for William, a Black doctor who could be blamed if George died. Series creator Julian Fellowes said the production consulted Victorian-medicine expert Dr. Stanley Burns. That is context about the show’s research and dramatic choices, not proof that every detail of the scene is historically exact.
What is the finale’s real shock?
George’s survival does not restore the Russells to their old footing. Bertha’s gala ends with a social victory, including Mrs. Astor’s approval of ending the exclusion of divorced women from society. But the morning after the shooting, George tells Bertha he is unsure he wants to continue their partnership. The danger exposes a conflict between his priorities and her ambition rather than removing him from the story.

Fellowes explained the intended tension to TheWrap: “We felt that George would look at his life after this attempt on it and not be pleased by everything he saw … [with Season 4] now there’s room to explore where that takes him, in comparison to his wife, who is still very firmly committed to her ambition.” TheWrap’s finale interview and recap
Would killing George have made a stronger ending?
That is a matter of dramatic judgment, not a question the episode can settle. A permanent loss would have delivered a sharper immediate shock and forced Bertha and the family into grief. It would also have ended George’s part in the central Russell marriage story just as the season opened a new question about what he wants from it.
The aired choice keeps that conflict alive. George’s near-death experience gives him a reason to reconsider his partnership, while Bertha’s public triumph leaves her still pursuing ambition. That creates sustained friction for a future season rather than one irreversible event. For a series built around social maneuvering and an ensemble of interlocking lives, the relationship cliffhanger is a more useful engine than a death simply because it is shocking. That is an argument for the finale’s choice, not proof there was one objectively correct character to kill.

The finale leaves several character threads open without confirming what season 4 will do with them:
- George and Bertha: George questions their partnership after the shooting, while Bertha remains committed to her ambition.
- Gladys: She tells Bertha she is pregnant, complicating the family’s immediate future.
- Peggy and William: They end the season engaged after William learns about Peggy’s adoption and the scandal surrounding it.
- Marian and Larry: They reconnect at the ball and dance, but TheWrap says it is unclear whether their engagement is fully restored.
- Agnes and Ada: Agnes accepts Ada as head of their household after being asked to become vice president of the New York Heritage Society.
- Oscar and Mrs. Winterton: Mourning John Adams, Oscar considers a possible marriage alliance with the widowed Mrs. Winterton.
These are possible paths, not confirmed season 4 storylines. Fellowes and co-writer Sonja Warfield did not preview their plans or return timing in the August 10, 2025 interview.
