There is no reliable public dataset that supports a current ranking of the world’s richest prosperity preachers by personal net worth. Frequently repeated dollar figures should be treated as estimates unless they can be traced to dated financial records that explain what assets and liabilities they include. A ministry’s money is not automatically its leader’s money.
Why a dependable “richest preachers” ranking is hard to make
A net-worth figure should measure a person’s assets minus liabilities. But public information about a religious organization usually describes the organization, not the private balance sheet of its pastor. Ministry revenue, ministry assets, compensation, book sales and personal net worth are different measures; none can be substituted for another without evidence showing how they connect.
A defensible comparison would also need a consistent date and method. It would identify who legally owns each reported asset and whether the calculation includes a spouse’s assets, private businesses, related entities, debts and other liabilities. Many widely circulated “richest pastor” figures do not come with enough disclosed methodology to answer those questions.
What public records can establish
Tax-exempt organization records
The IRS says its statistics on tax-exempt organizations compile data from Forms 990 and 990-EZ: IRS statistics on charities and other tax-exempt organizations. These are organization-level records and statistics, not a complete personal net-worth statement for a ministry leader.

Compensation and private benefit
IRS guidance for Form 1023 treats compensation broadly, including salary, benefits, deferred compensation and payment of personal expenses. It also discusses related-party transactions and excessive compensation as potential private-benefit concerns. What the Senate inquiry did—and did not—find
The Senate Finance Committee’s March 12, 2008 communication named Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, Creflo and Taffi Dollar, and Eddie Long among ministries that had not cooperated at that point. The committee noted that some cited privacy protections or questioned its authority to request information, and distinguished its tax-policy role from the IRS’s responsibility for enforcing existing law. In its January 6, 2011 review, the committee said four ministries had provided no information or incomplete information. It specifically reported that Kenneth and Gloria Copeland submitted incomplete responses and Creflo and Taffi Dollar declined to provide requested information. Those descriptions concern responses to the committee’s request; they do not establish individual net worth, a legal violation or guilt. Senate Finance Committee, January 6, 2011.
The Houston Chronicle later reported that the Grassley inquiry ended without determining whether the investigated preachers had violated IRS standards for maintaining tax-exempt status. Its reporting on Lakewood Church said the church had taken steps to separate nonprofit operations from Joel Osteen’s personal fortune, while also noting that Lakewood had not publicly released all its finances. The newspaper also quoted Osteen discussing the church board’s family governance: “It’s been family since my dad, and I’ve felt good keeping it like it is.” That remark was about the board, not his personal net worth. What book counts can—and can’t—tell you
A scholarly paper, Consecrating Capitalism, warns that sales, yearly income and even congregation figures in this field are difficult to uncover or assess. It uses Goodreads author-page counts as a conservative proxy for merchandising activity, not as a measure of book sales, revenue or personal wealth. Its 2018 snapshot listed these counts of “distinct works” attributed to the authors:

The paper’s counts are historical and describe author-page listings at the time, not current catalogs. Its broader point is that ministry merchandise can be visible while the financial scale of the market remains difficult to verify. How to assess a “richest preacher” claim
Before treating a reported amount as a person’s wealth, check what the claim actually measures and how it was calculated:
- Person or organization: Does the record identify the individual as owner or recipient, or does it describe a church or ministry?
- Measure: Is the figure net worth, compensation, ministry revenue or assets, book sales, or an estimate-site number?
- Date and currency: When was it calculated, and is it a current figure or an older nominal amount?
- Method and source: Is it grounded in a primary filing, audited statement or direct disclosure, or is the methodology unclear?
- Completeness: Does it account for liabilities, spouse assets, private businesses and related entities?
Historical reporting about the 2007 inquiry raised questions about ministry assets, aircraft, compensation and related transactions, alongside responses from ministries. Those reports record questions and statements at the time, not findings; any claim about a jet, gift, home, loan or transfer needs its original date, attribution and procedural context.
