Spoilers for “What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?” After fighting Steve Rogers inside the Hydra Stomper, Captain Carter is suddenly transported to a different, medieval-looking reality. There she encounters a variant Nick Fury and Wanda Maximoff, known as Wanda-Merlin. The scene is a cliffhanger: it shifts Carter into a new story rather than resolving what happens to Steve or explaining exactly how the transition occurred.
What happens at the end of Episode 5?
The episode’s official premise centers on Captain Carter’s mission to save Steve Rogers, whom she eventually faces as the brainwashed pilot of the Hydra Stomper. After their confrontation, Carter is transported to another reality with an Elizabethan or medieval appearance. She meets a version of Nick Fury and Wanda-Merlin, a Wanda Maximoff variant whose name invokes Arthurian legend.
Disney’s listing identifies the episode as “What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?” and describes Carter’s mission as putting her on a collision course with new enemies. Disney+ lists the episode in its catalog; access can vary by region.
Why is the ending a cliffhanger?
The episode changes the setting before closing the Steve-and-Peggy story. Carter’s arrival in the new reality, alongside Wanda-Merlin and a variant Nick Fury, points toward another chapter in the multiverse rather than a completed rescue. The emotional tension remains too: the person inside the armor is Steve, but fighting him does not instantly restore him to the man Peggy remembers.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The available episode coverage establishes that Carter is transported and identifies the figures she encounters, but it does not establish the portal’s precise mechanism or why Carter was chosen. It is reasonable to read the scene as a transition into a separate reality; claims that Wanda-Merlin summoned Carter, or a detailed explanation of how the magic works, go beyond what is confirmed.
Who are Wanda-Merlin and Nick Fury?
They are versions of familiar Marvel characters in the new reality, not simply the main-timeline Wanda and Nick Fury appearing in their usual roles. Wanda-Merlin’s name and the setting’s period-inspired look signal a reality with a different, legendary flavor. The scene introduces them as part of the cliffhanger; it does not, by itself, explain the rules or history of their world.

Why is Hope Van Dyne the Wasp in this timeline?
The episode also features Hope Van Dyne as the Wasp in its Avengers lineup. What If…? head writer A.C. Bradley explained that Captain Carter’s role in ending World War II changed the timeline’s social conditions, including women’s access to authority and work in S.H.I.E.L.D. Bradley told SuperHeroHype: “Since Captain Carter — a woman — ended WW2, the feminist movement occurred immediately after the war. This had a ripple effect across society leading to more female SHIELD agents, heroes, & women in positions of authority.”
That explanation illustrates the show’s alternate-history logic: changing who shaped a major event can alter opportunities and institutions later on. It explains Hope’s place in this branch, not the portal at the end.

What does the ending leave unresolved?
- Steve’s fate: The episode’s mission is to save him, but the final transition does not settle what will happen to Steve after the confrontation.
- Carter’s destination: She reaches a different, period-styled reality and meets Wanda-Merlin and a variant Nick Fury.
- The portal’s cause: The scene does not provide a confirmed explanation for what transported Carter or whether anyone deliberately brought her there.
The most grounded interpretation is that Episode 5 ends by moving Captain Carter into a new multiverse storyline while leaving her original rescue mission unresolved. The Elizabethan imagery may remind viewers of Marvel’s 1602, but that is useful as adjacent background, not a key required to understand the cliffhanger.
