On October 25, 1979, a disturbance at Miami Aerospace Academy sent students and teachers running and screaming through the school, with reports of broken glass and a damaged door. A contemporary Associated Press account linked the timing to a tenth-grade hypnosis demonstration, but it did not establish that hypnosis caused the episode.
What happened at Miami Aerospace Academy?
The incident took place at the school in Miami’s Little Havana section. A report published the next day described students and teachers running through the building, screaming, and damaging property. Miami police officer Harry Cunnil was quoted as saying, “The whole school went berserk.”
Miami Fire Department spokesman Dan LeMay said six or seven students had collapsed or were lying on the floor. The report described broken glass and a door pulled from its hinges. One youth received treatment for cuts after breaking a window; no serious injuries were reported among the school’s roughly 300 students. Those numbers come from the contemporary report, not a separate medical tally or school register. Read the October 26, 1979, Pampa News / AP account.
Did hypnosis cause the disturbance?
The report said police connected the outbreak’s timing to a tenth-grade science demonstration of hypnosis. It does not describe a controlled experiment, establish what happened during the demonstration in detail, or prove a causal link. Students also told fire personnel they had recently attended a class about the supernatural. These are reported classroom contexts, not verified explanations.

How did officials and students explain it?
| Explanation | Who advanced it | What the account supports |
|---|---|---|
| Hypnosis as a trigger | Police, as reported by the AP account | The demonstration was said to precede the disturbance; timing alone does not establish cause. |
| A “domino effect” or hysteria | Fire spokesman Dan LeMay and police | LeMay interpreted the students’ reactions as induced by seeing others become hysterical. This was a contemporary interpretation, not a documented medical diagnosis. |
| Supernatural possession | Some students, according to the contemporary accounts | Students reportedly spoke about demons or possession. Their statements do not demonstrate that possession occurred. |
| A political setup | School president Evaristo Marina, in later reporting | Marina alleged that someone had put the students up to it in an effort to target him before an election. The reviewed account does not verify that allegation. |
Marina also denied that the school taught hypnosis or witchcraft, telling reporters, “We don’t teach those things here.” Cheryl Eddy’s 2015 retrospective in Gizmodo reports his political explanation, including his remark: “One week before the election and everybody is out to get me.” That is Marina’s claim, not an established account of how the disturbance began.
What can—and can’t—be concluded?
The October 26, 1979, newspaper report is useful for the date, location, reported events, and statements attributed to officials and the school president. It is not a medical case record. The sources cited here do not establish that hypnosis caused the outbreak, that students were clinically diagnosed with mass psychogenic illness, or that supernatural activity occurred. “Hysteria” was a characterization used at the time, not a confirmed modern diagnosis.
