Actor and executive producer Ramón Rodríguez called the stakes high and teased “some new romances — and maybe some old romances” for the season, without confirming which relationships will develop.
What happens in the Season 4 premiere?
Season 4, Episode 1, “…Speaking of Sharks,” aired Tuesday, January 6, 2026. The ABC crime drama is based on Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent book series, with Rodríguez starring as Will and serving as an executive producer. (ABC; TV Insider)
The premiere picks up after a time jump from Season 3. Will is still processing major changes, including meeting his father, while Angie is pregnant with Seth’s child. Will also begins therapy with Dr. Roach, played by Margaret Cho, and meets more of his biological father Caleb’s family. When escaped criminal James Ulster becomes a threat, Will pursues him despite being kept away from the case. (TV Insider; Us Weekly)
Did Will die in the cliffhanger?
The premiere does not confirm that Will is dead. Ulster takes him hostage, and the ending leaves Faith, Amanda, and Caleb at the scene of a burned-out car. They find two male bodies and Will’s recorder, but the episode does not establish that either body is Will’s. Rodríguez told TV Insider, “We’re probably not going to lose our hero in the first episode, but we’re going to see him sort of have to really navigate and deal with some real difficult decisions as to who he is.” (TV Insider)

In a January 6 interview with Us Weekly, Rodríguez said “the stakes are really high” while Will is missing. That describes the danger and uncertainty created by the ending, not a confirmed death. (Us Weekly)
What did Ramón Rodríguez tease about romance?
Rodríguez told Us Weekly, “Then obviously the rest of the season we have some new romances — and maybe some old romances. It will be a lot of fun.” He did not identify every possible couple or confirm that any particular relationship would resume. (Us Weekly)

Will and Angie: history, not a confirmed reunion
The interviews point to Will and Angie’s complicated past as one relationship the season will examine. Rodríguez asked whether they can navigate their history as friends, describing them as “on-again, off-again” and raising the question of whether their “trauma bond” continues. In a separate interview, he framed the issue as whether they can move forward as friends given their shared history. Those comments leave the outcome open; they are not confirmation that Will and Angie get back together. (Us Weekly; TV Insider)
Why the cliffhanger matters to Will’s character
Rodríguez described the season as a test of Will’s moral compass and familiar ways of coping. Therapy brings difficult emotions into focus: “For someone who has such a loaded past in history, for the first time he is really getting into therapy. Then a lot of stuff starts coming up for him.” The danger posed by Ulster is therefore paired with a personal question about how Will responds to pressure and who he wants to be. (Us Weekly)

Where to watch
ABC’s official Season 4 press sheet lists Hulu as a streaming home. In its January 2026 schedule report, Us Weekly said new episodes aired Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and streamed on Hulu the next day. That schedule is dated US information; check ABC and Hulu for current scheduling and whether the show is available in your region. (ABC; Us Weekly)

The premiere’s ending is an open cliffhanger, not the full resolution of the Ulster story. On January 14, 2026, after the two-part premiere had concluded, TVLine reported that Ulster had died in Episode 2 and discussed how that event affects Will’s moral code and emotional defenses. That later context should not be mistaken for information the premiere itself reveals. (TVLine)
