Jenny and Dave Marrs found Sylvie through a waiting-child profile while exploring international adoption, but bringing her home from the Democratic Republic of the Congo took far longer than they expected. Jenny says the family waited 602 days; Sylvie arrived in the United States in July 2014, after a reported suspension of exit letters delayed her travel.
How did Jenny and Dave Marrs meet Sylvie?
The Marrses had considered adoption for years and explored international programs. Jenny told AY Magazine that their twin boys were about a year and a half old when they began the process, and that they felt especially drawn to Africa. After signing up for a program, they saw Sylvie’s photo on a waiting-child site.
“We signed up for a program and then we saw our daughter’s photo on one of the waiting child sites. I got an email about her. I just knew. There’s no other way to describe it. We just knew it was her.”

HGTV says the couple began looking into adoption programs in 2012. Its profile says Sylvie was officially welcomed into the Marrs family in August 2013. That milestone is distinct from her later arrival home in the United States.

Why couldn’t Sylvie come home when expected?
Jenny said the family expected Sylvie to come home in fall 2013, but the Republic of the Congo suspended exit letters for adopted children, preventing them from leaving the country. According to Jenny, Sylvie received a special exit letter the following summer. This is her account of the delay; the government action is not independently confirmed by the cited reporting.
“We thought she’d be home in the fall of 2013 but the Republic of Congo suspended exit letters for adopted kids, and they wouldn’t allow them to leave the country. So, she got a special exit letter that next summer to come home.”

The separation meant that adoption and travel home did not happen at the same time. A 2019 People interview republished by Yahoo also described the family’s separation, Dave’s trips, and their efforts to seek help, though its page was not accessible for full review.
How long did the Marrses wait, and when did Sylvie arrive?
Jenny said Sylvie came home in July 2014, when she was two and a half. In a July 2026 anniversary post quoted by TV Insider, Jenny described the wait as 602 days and recalled praying, contacting members of Congress and senators, and traveling to ask the U.S. Embassy for help.

The 602 days describe Jenny’s account of her family’s wait, not a general timeline for international adoption. The dates also refer to different milestones: HGTV’s August 2013 account of Sylvie being welcomed into the family and Jenny’s July 2014 account of bringing her home.
