Will & Harper follows longtime friends Will Ferrell and Harper Steele on a cross-country road trip that makes room for jokes, difficult conversations and a closer look at what Steele’s transition meant for their friendship. Their reasons for taking the trip, as they describe them, are personal: Steele wanted to revisit places she had avoided, and Ferrell wanted to be there as a friend.
What is Will & Harper about?
Released in 2024, Will & Harper is a documentary built around a road trip across the United States. Netflix describes it as an intimate portrait of friendship, transition and America. The film centers on Ferrell and Steele travelling together and talking about their relationship as Steele, a trans woman, revisits parts of the country she had not felt able to experience in the same way before. Why did Ferrell and Steele take the road trip?
Ferrell and Steele were friends and collaborators long before the film; Netflix’s interview feature describes their connection through their work at Saturday Night Live and their continuing personal friendship. The trip offered Steele the chance to return to places she had missed, while giving both friends time to reconnect and discuss how her transition had affected their relationship.
Ferrell explained the idea this way: “What if we went on a road trip together, giving her a chance to go into a cowboy bar or whatever places she misses, and I can be by her side and lend support as a friend?” Steele described why being able to travel beyond familiar coastal cities mattered to her: “I didn’t just want to come out in places like New York or LA and forever live on either coast.” Both remarks come from Netflix Tudum’s interview with Ferrell and Steele; they are the participants’ accounts of the trip’s purpose.

How does the documentary balance comedy and vulnerability?
The film’s road-trip format lets casual moments and serious discussions sit side by side. Director Josh Greenbaum has described trying to preserve that contrast rather than treat the story as either a comedy or a solemn account of hardship. In his Netflix Tudum interview, he recalled: “It was definitely an emotional journey for me — both the trip and then the [editing] process — but every day in the editing room I found myself bouncing between dying of laughter at their bits and then suddenly crying as we delved deeper into Harper’s story and the pain she endured.”
That description is Greenbaum’s perspective on making the film, not a claim that every viewer will respond the same way. It helps explain why the documentary’s humor and emotional conversations are presented as parts of the same friendship. Greenbaum’s director interview discusses that editorial balance.

Who directed the film, and when was it released?
Will & Harper was directed by Josh Greenbaum. TIME reported that the documentary opened in a limited theatrical release on September 13, 2024, before arriving on Netflix on September 27, 2024. The participants told TIME that the shoot generated 200 hours of footage; that is a production detail reported in the interview, not a measure of the film’s final runtime.
