Broadway Direct announced the leads and the full company. Sam Gold directed the staging of William Shakespeare’s play.
What was distinctive about this staging?
Gold’s production placed Shakespeare’s tragedy in a contemporary frame rather than presenting it as a period piece. Broadway Direct described its central couple as impulsive star-crossed lovers moving toward an inescapable fate. The Associated Press characterized the staging as a “Brooklyn-rave take” and reported that Jack Antonoff supplied music.

Zegler sang “Man of the House,” a ballad produced by Antonoff that was also released as a single, according to the Associated Press report. The sources cited here do not establish that a physical soundtrack or a recording of the full production was released.
What did reports say about the audience and ticket demand?
The Associated Press reported that producers said 14% of the show’s ticket purchasers were 18 to 24 years old, compared with a 3% Broadway industry average. Those are producer-reported figures relayed by AP, not an independently audited audience count. AP also described average ticket prices as hovering around $150, lines for rush tickets and the lottery forming hours before the box office opened, and all but one week selling out. These are retrospective details about the closed run, not current ticket guidance.

Gold told the Associated Press: “It was very clear that young people found our show because it was doing what theater’s supposed to do. Be a mirror.” The contemporary setting, pop music and young lead performers offered a recognizable frame for Shakespeare’s story of desire, family conflict and fatal consequences. The audience figures reported by AP provide one measure of who bought tickets, but they do not establish why individual audience members chose the show.
