Prince Harry said he wrote Spare to correct accounts of his life that he felt had already been told from only one point of view. In a September 2025 interview with The Guardian, he called the memoir “a series of corrections to stories already out there.” He said he did not regret making his account public and that his conscience was clear.
Harry’s stated reason for writing Spare
Speaking to Nick Hopkins of The Guardian during a visit to Kyiv, Harry explained: “The book? It was a series of corrections to stories already out there. One point of view had been put out and it needed to be corrected.” The book, in his telling, was a response to existing public narratives—not a decision to reveal private matters for their own sake.
Harry rejected the suggestion that he had simply aired family “dirty laundry” in public. “It was a difficult message, but I did it in the best way possible. My conscience is clear,” he said. He described his position as principled rather than stubborn, and said, “It is not about revenge, it is about accountability.”
What he meant by accountability and reconciliation
Harry linked accountability to the possibility of repairing relationships. In the same interview, he said “you cannot have reconciliation before you have truth”. That is his stated view of what must come before reconciliation; it does not establish that every account in the memoir has been independently verified.

Where the “finally explains” headline came from
The phrase “finally explains exactly why” appeared in the headline of an AOL syndicated account published September 15, 2025. The original interview by Nick Hopkins had appeared in The Guardian the day before, September 14, under the headline “‘My conscience is clear’: Prince Harry on Ukraine, his family and the media.” The interview ranged across Ukraine, Harry’s work with the Invictus Games Foundation, his family and the media; it was not a new statement devoted exclusively to Spare.
Harry’s answer is therefore best read as his own explanation for writing the memoir: he wanted to put forward what he considered a correction to stories already circulating. It describes his motive, rather than independently settling disputes about the events he recounts.
