That is a rule for the Art Show—not evidence of a convention-wide ban on AI.
What Comic-Con’s current Art Show rule says
Comic-Con International’s Art Show guidance states: “Material created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) either partially or wholly, is not allowed in the art show. If there are questions, the Art Show Coordinator will be the sole judge of acceptability.” The guidance does not name an individual who issued the wording.
The rule excludes work made in whole or in part with AI. The page does not give examples or further define what counts as partial AI creation; in cases of uncertainty, it assigns the acceptability decision to the Art Show Coordinator.
How the policy changed
Earlier language for the 2026 show allowed AI-produced work to be displayed only as not-for-sale (NFS), with an AI label. Times of San Diego reported that disclosure was also required if a prompt or parameter invoked a specific artist’s style, and that Comic-Con changed the language after artists criticized the approach. Times of San Diego’s account and The Comics Beat’s January 14 report, which also described the change from an NFS-only allowance to a ban on AI-generated art, document that chronology. The Comics Beat’s report is contemporaneous coverage; the official page gives the current rule exhibitors should consult.

Where the rule applies—and where it does not establish a ban
The restriction is explicitly for Comic-Con International’s Art Show. The official wording does not establish a general prohibition across Comic-Con, its other events, or every exhibition associated with the convention. Do not treat the Art Show policy as a convention-wide AI rule.
When and where the 2026 Art Show takes place
The official page lists the 2026 Art Show for July 23–26 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, a short walk from the San Diego Convention Center. It says the Art Show is open to the public without a Comic-Con badge. Its offerings include original drawings, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and other work; reproductions are permitted under the show’s rules.
