She made a brief screen return in The Anniversary Party in 2001, but said the appearance did not mean she was coming out of retirement. She later opened Blue Tree, a New York boutique. The available accounts point to changing artistic interests and family life as context, not to one proven reason for her decision.
How Phoebe Cates became a familiar face
Cates broke through as Linda Barrett in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), then built a steady film and television career through the 1980s. Her screen work included the Gremlins films, Date with an Angel and Drop Dead Fred. She also performed on stage.
By 1988, Cates was expressing greater interest in theater than film. A 2025 Us Weekly profile quotes her saying there were “simply not that many good parts in film” and that theater was what she liked most. That perspective offers useful context for her later choices: her career was not simply a matter of disappearing after a hit movie.
When did she stop acting regularly?
Princess Caraboo (1994) was Cates’s last starring film before her later screen appearance in The Anniversary Party (2001). The distinction matters: the 2001 film was a return to the screen, but not a sustained comeback. Directed by Jennifer Jason Leigh, her friend and former Fast Times co-star, it was a one-off appearance.

In a 2001 report, Fox News said Cates told its reporter that the film did not mean she was coming out of retirement. She did not resume regular acting afterward.
Was family the reason she left Hollywood?
Cates married actor Kevin Kline in New York in 1989. Their children, Owen and Greta, were born in 1991 and 1994. Those milestones overlap with the period when she reduced her screen work, but the chronology does not prove that parenthood was the sole reason. The published accounts also describe her changing interests and preference for stage work; they do not establish one definitive explanation.
What did Phoebe Cates do after acting?
In October 2005, Cates opened Blue Tree, a boutique on New York’s Madison Avenue. The 2025 Us Weekly profile describes its eclectic selection of gifts and other goods, including perfume, candles, stuffed animals and photography, and reports that Cates was hands-on in choosing products. Recalling her idea for the shop in a 2006 USA Today interview, as quoted by Us Weekly, she said, “I always wanted to have a general store.”
The published accounts establish the store’s launch and concept, but not its current operating status, inventory, hours or Cates’s day-to-day involvement. They therefore do not support a claim about what she does there today.

What is known—and what is not
The documented story is a shift away from regular acting, a brief 2001 appearance that Cates did not describe as a return from retirement, and a later move into retail. The sources do not substantiate a scandal, health crisis or other sensational cause, nor do they provide a detailed account of her current daily life. A 2025 TV Insider article reflects the continuing public question about her decision, but its accessible excerpt does not add further biographical detail.
