When will Season 3 be released?
Season 3 is planned for 2027, but no exact premiere date has been announced in the September 2026 coverage. HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys told the Los Angeles Times that the series was “definitely planned for 2027.” Treat that as the current expected year, not a confirmed date. Has filming started?
Yes. The Los Angeles Times reported production began in March 2026 and was scheduled to run through late November. It also reported that the June 1–28 break was a planned temporary pause, connected to local preparations for Vancouver’s FIFA World Cup matches—not a cancellation. What will Season 3 be about?
Season 2 ended with a shift in perspective that sets up the Abby portion of The Last of Us Part II. Season 3 is expected to follow Abby’s side of the story, including events in Seattle. Craig Mazin has described the intended effect of that perspective shift as making viewers reconsider their feelings about Abby and where their loyalties lie. He told the Los Angeles Times that the challenge was to make viewers “question whether you hate Abby at all and maybe make you start to love her and then be confused.” That describes the creative aim, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond.

Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby is expected to anchor the season’s changed point of view. Craig Mazin continues as showrunner. Neil Druckmann said in July 2025 that he was stepping away from creative involvement to focus on Naughty Dog and its future projects; the reported change does not, by itself, indicate a dispute between the collaborators. Will Season 3 be the last season?
That has not been decided. Bloys told the Los Angeles Times that it remained unclear whether the story would take two more seasons or one longer season, and that the decision had not been made. Season 3 should not be described as the finale unless HBO announces that status.
