David Baker, a friend who said he had known Alison Carey for nine years, described her as having “a tough life” in a PEOPLE interview republished by Yahoo on Aug. 28, 2024. That phrase was Baker’s personal assessment, not a diagnosis or a complete account of her life. The report said Alison died at home in Coxsackie, New York, on Aug. 24, 2024, aged 63.
How David Baker came to know Alison Carey
Baker told PEOPLE that he met Alison in 2015 after responding to a request from her brother Morgan for someone near Albany to visit her. As Baker recounted it, Alison had suffered a serious brain injury during a home invasion and then a brain hemorrhage while in rehabilitation. Those details come from Baker’s recollection as reported in the interview.
Baker said he and Alison remained close and spoke or saw each other frequently. He also said he helped her find an apartment in Coxsackie, where she had lived for about three years before her death. He described her as “a highly intelligent, very sensitive person.”
Her final illness and death
Baker said Alison became ill fairly quickly and entered hospice earlier in August 2024. “We saw it coming, but it’s still a shock,” he told PEOPLE, adding, “She got ill fairly quickly and a month later, she’s gone.” He said he had offered help so she could continue living independently rather than move to a nursing home. “She got her wish. She died in her own home,” he said.

The report said Alison died at home on Aug. 24, 2024, at age 63. It did not disclose a cause of death, so no cause can be established from this account.
Her children and the same-day family losses
Alison was a mother of four: three sons and a daughter. Baker said her children visited in the weeks before she died.
Mariah Carey said her mother, Patricia, died on the same day as Alison. In a statement to PEOPLE, Mariah said: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” She added that she felt blessed to have spent the last week with her mother and asked for love, support and respect for her privacy.

Baker was unsure whether Alison and Mariah had last seen each other in 1994 or 2002, so the report does not establish the exact year. It described the sisters as estranged. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah wrote that contact with Alison and Morgan had felt emotionally and physically unsafe to her at that time. That is Mariah’s account of the relationship, not a comprehensive or neutral history of both sisters’ experiences.
