Yes. In a June 2025 interview marking the 50th anniversary of Jaws, Lorraine Gary recalled, “I had a mad crush on Robert Shaw.” She described admiration for Shaw’s acting, playwriting, intellect and character—not a romance or affair. Gary played Ellen Brody; Shaw played Quint, the shark hunter.
What Lorraine Gary said about Robert Shaw
Gary’s account appeared in PEOPLE’s June 19, 2025, anniversary interview. She said her attraction went beyond Shaw’s looks: “Now for me, he was more than a gorgeous actor. He was a playwright, he was an intellectual, he was a lovely, lovely human being. And yes, that was thrilling.”

The remark is a personal recollection of a crush and affection for a costar. It does not establish that the two had a romantic relationship. Read Gary’s interview with PEOPLE.
How Gary and Shaw got to know each other
Gary recalled that their time together on Martha’s Vineyard, where Jaws was filmed, was brief: “We only had three days together in the Vineyard, and that’s when I began to know him.” She also remembered having dinner with Shaw later in California, while filming continued at Universal.

One lighter memory involved Gary’s son Billy. She said Shaw greeted him with “Hello, poxy!” because Shaw suspected the boy was coming down with chicken pox. Gary’s anecdotes offer a glimpse of their rapport, but she did not describe an extended relationship.

In the same interview, Gary recalled director Steven Spielberg being nervous during the production, when the mechanical shark was unreliable. “Steven’s a very human guy, and of course he was nervous,” she said. She also credited her husband, then Universal executive Sid Sheinberg, with backing Spielberg: “It was Sid that decided to spend the extra money to bet on Steven’s talent.” These are Gary’s recollections in the anniversary interview.

PEOPLE’s account also notes that Gary retired from acting in 1979 after 1941, then returned to play Ellen Brody again in Jaws: The Revenge (1987). The central story remains her warm memory of Shaw, her costar in the original film.
