Paul Walker appears in Fast X as Brian O’Conner through archival footage from Fast Five, not through newly filmed scenes. Director Louis Leterrier said he searched Universal’s archive for unused footage from the earlier movie and combined it with new shots of other performers for parts of the opening sequence.
How does Paul Walker return in Fast X?
The film opens by revisiting the safe heist from Fast Five, bringing Walker’s Brian back on screen using footage made for that earlier film. Leterrier said he reviewed Universal’s archive of Fast Five dailies and unused material, including wide angles and stunt footage. In a Film Stories interview, he recalled that “there was a lot of Paul Walker” in the material he watched, and said seeing Walker and Vin Diesel together in the dailies was touching.
That account describes the Brian footage as archival material. It does not indicate that Walker filmed scenes for Fast X.
Is Paul Walker CGI in Fast X?
Leterrier’s explanation distinguishes Walker’s archived performance from new footage created for the sequence. For some shots, the production filmed Jason Momoa and Joaquim de Almeida and composited them into pre-existing car footage. Leterrier said the crew matched the earlier film’s 35mm stock, lenses and camera: “We used the same 35mm film stock and the same lenses, same camera, everything.” In certain older shots, the original driver was removed and Momoa was inserted.

So, the director described compositing new performers into old footage—not digitally generating a new Walker performance. His interviews describe the method for the shots he discussed; they do not establish the provenance or technique of every shot in the sequence.
Why does Fast X revisit the Fast Five heist?
The opening retells the earlier safe robbery from a different perspective. In Fast Five, Dom and Brian steal the safe while the Reyes family tries to protect its money. Fast X reveals that Dante Reyes, the son of crime boss Hernan Reyes, witnessed the events and has spent years seeking revenge on Dom and his family. The archival footage therefore connects the new film’s conflict to the earlier heist as well as bringing Brian back into the story.

What did the director say about honoring Walker?
Leterrier told Uproxx that Brian remains alive in the franchise and that the film’s use of the character was meant to celebrate Brian and honor Walker. He described his intention simply: “I wanted to pay homage. That’s it.” He also pointed to the film’s emotional references to Walker and the appearance of Walker’s daughter, Meadow, in a stewardess role. Those choices express the filmmakers’ tribute; they are separate from the archival footage used for Brian’s appearance.
