What is “Purple Irises” about?
Stefani explained the song’s flower imagery in the release announcement: “when you plant something you are planting hope and watching love grow.” She connected that idea to a relationship weathering “all the different seasons of growth,” adding, “We are in this together, we planted the seeds together and we are growing together.” Universal Music Canada’s announcement presents the song as a shared commitment, with the iris image standing for love cultivated over time.
A brief lyric excerpt reported by ABC’s Good Morning America adds a note of vulnerability: Stefani sings, “Don’t want to lose you,” before the image of “pickin’ purple irises.” That glimpse pairs the wish to protect a relationship with the song’s image of growth.
When did it come out, and how was it introduced?
The song first arrived as a digital single on February 9, 2024, released through Warner Music Nashville, Interscope Records, and Universal Music Canada. Apple Music’s US catalog lists a one-song single and gives its copyright as ℗ 2024 Warner Music Nashville LLC. The catalog also credits Stefani, Jakob Hazell, Niko Rubio, and Svante Halldin as songwriters. Apple Music’s US listing provides the single’s track and credit details.

Two different debuts were announced for that weekend. On February 9, iHeartMedia reported a radio world premiere across iHeartCountry and iHeartRadio Hot AC stations. A live performance with Stefani and Shelton was planned for the Super Bowl LVIII TikTok Tailgate in Las Vegas on February 11. The radio premiere and the scheduled live appearance were separate events, as described by iHeartMedia and Universal Music Canada.
Why is Blake Shelton on the song?
Shelton said he fell for the song when Stefani played it for him. In the label announcement, he recalled that she had written it with friends and then asked him to sing with her: “I fell in love with it the first time I heard it.” His account makes the duet a collaboration that grew from Stefani’s song rather than a track initially introduced as a co-written pair effort.

Scott Hendricks produced “Purple Irises.” Universal Music Canada says it was recorded at Smoakstack Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. The Apple Music US listing names Stefani, Hazell, Rubio, and Halldin as songwriters; its catalog context identifies the release as a pop single.

After its February single release, “Purple Irises” appeared as the closing duet on Stefani’s 2024 album Bouquet. The Associated Press described Bouquet as a 10-track album with mellow rock and country touches, and identified the duet as its final track in its November 15, 2024 review. This album placement came later than the song’s first release as a single.
